Holistic Practitioners are holistic healing professionals with a gift in one or more areas of healing. From bodyworkers to homeopaths to hypnotherapists, the term holistic practitioner has become one that is often challenging to describe or understand. I hope that this article will provide you with some clarity on what a holistic practitioner is and how to find one that meets your individual needs.
Saying holistic practitioner is similar to saying doctor. While there are general practitioners that cross along many paths, most specialize in one or more holistic methods or areas. The main areas of specialization are body-centered therapists, energy-centered therapists, mind-centered therapists, soul and spirit-centered therapists, emotional release therapists, and coaches/counselors. All of these therapists strive to bring a greater quality of life to their clients. That may occur through inner balance, self-empowerment, physical ease, or even emotional confidence.
One thing to realize is that many holistic practitioners work in many areas. In fact, it is usually challenging to limit a practitioner to one area. For example, a hypnotherapist may also be a chakra therapist; bodyworkers could also be a spiritual counselor, etc. Also, since the mind-body-soul connection is just that, connected, wherever you begin, be it in energy work, bodywork, or even the mind, you will find that all of you is affected by the work.
Use this article as a guide to explore the realms of possibilities, rather than limiting your choices to an area.
Body-centered Therapists
Samples of body-centered therapists are bodyworkers, massage therapists, pilates and yoga therapists, rolfing professionals(often termed rolfers), acupressure therapists, myofascial release and sports massage therapists, reflexologists, thai massage therapists, watsu practitioners, feldenkrais and Alexander method professionals, and movement therapists (this list is provided to offer an overview as there are at least 50 types of body-centered therapists).
While each body-centered therapist has their own way of working with clients, many use a combination of movement, the breath, and physical pressure (from massage to trigger points) to allow the body to release tension. This release of tension then allows the mind to find a relaxing state. Sometimes the relaxation state is the goal of the sessions, other times, it is the true starting point.
Energy-centered Therapists
Samples of energy-centered therapists are integrative energy workers, reek practitioners, healing touch practitioners, breathwork therapists, jin shin do and jin shin jytsu therapists, matrix therapists, applied kinesiologists, orgone therapists, polarity workers, cranial sacral workers, qigong and tai chi masters. Acupuncturists and homeopathy practitioners could also be deemed energy workers.
Energy workers often work with energetic ‘maps’ of the body. They look at where the energy is stuck, depleted, or overtaxed in the body and work with the individual to bring a level of balance to the body’s energetic system. This balance also affects the mind and the overall body, enhancing ones state of being on many levels.
Mind-centered Therapists
Samples of mind-centered therapists are hypnotherapists, neuro-linguistic programming practitioners (NLP), integrative release therapists (IRT), regression therapists, and metaphysicians.
Mind-centered therapists look at the structures of one’s belief systems and how they may be conflicting with and/or not supporting a client’s quality of life. Mind-centered therapists often find the original cause of what the stuck states are and work with the unconscious mind to reframe limiting patterns and beliefs, which provide greater resources and confidence for the client to live the life they desire.
Soul and Spirit-centered Therapists
Samples of soul and spirit-centered therapists are shamans, angelic masters, psychic mediums, intuitive guides, and spiritual counselors (who would fall into the coaching/counseling category).
Soul and spirit-centered therapists work with clients in a variety of ways. A shaman may work with a client using soul retrieval to regain a part of their soul that has been ‘lost’ due to trauma. A psychic may offer an individual information on what will happen on their current path if they don’t make changes. An intuitive may assist a client in talking with a deceased loved one. As with the other categories, there are many ways soul and spirit-centered therapists work with their clients.
Emotional Release Therapists
Samples of emotional release therapists are integrative release therapists, somato-emotional therapists, psych-k therapists and amanae therapists.
Emotional release therapists work with patterns of emotions that are stuck in the body/mind and assist a client in moving through these blocks into greater joy and emotional freedom. Many other therapies, including neuro-linguistic programming, yoga, shamanic work, and energy work employ emotional release methodologies.
Holistic Coaches and Counselors
Samples of coaches and counselors are life coaches, empowerment coaches, spiritual and intuitive counselors, holistic psychologists, and nutritional counselors.
Coaches and counselors assist clients in designing and manifesting the life, career, business, and health situations that they truly desire. A holistic coach or counselor often works with a client 1-4x per month setting goals, opening belief systems and partnering with the client to provide the support they need to move forward in their lives.
As you can see, the term holistic practitioner can be used to mean a holistic profession trained in any number of areas. Usually, a holistic practitioner will list their areas of expertise in any of their advertising to assist you in determining if they would be a fit for your unique situation.

Blessings on your journey.

“Variety is the Spice of Life.” This is one of my favorite quotes, and how true it is. Is life not much better when it is filled with a “variety” of the things we like? Of course it is. It is inevitable that some things in your life will go wrong, so it is nice to have other things that you still enjoy to fall back on. Like investing, they always say, “Do not put all of your eggs in one basket.” The same goes for our personal lives. The way to be happy is to fill our lives with a “variety” of things that make us happy. If you have a variety of things that make you happy, this decreases the risk of becoming unhappy if just a few things go wrong. So, do not risk your happiness by not broadening your horizons and not finding and doing a variety of things that you enjoy. One way to fill your life with a variety of things is to get different hobbies. Hobbies can be as numerous as there are ideas. If you have an idea of something you would like to do, then go and do it.
Many people do not fill their lives with the things or hobbies that they would like to do. Since it is so obvious that variety is the spice of life, what makes people not fill their lives with a variety of the things that make them happy? There are many explanations for this. Some are financial. People cannot afford to pay for all of the things they would like to do. Many people are tied down by debts; they have put on the golden hand-cuffs and cannot find a way out. This obviously impedes on their pursuit of recreational things. Another reason for people to not pursue personal hobbies or interests is a time constraint. People are so busy working or have other things to do that they just do not have time to pursue recreational activities.
I have found, however, that if you just prioritize your time and money better, you should in the long term be able to pursue successfully, any interest or hobby you have. In fact, by pursuing personal interests outside of work, you can increase your effectiveness in the work place. Everyone needs a recreational break from working all the time. It improves morale and makes employees work more efficiently.
Like I said, there are as many hobbies as there are ideas. There is not limit to what you can do if you just go after it. Hobbies by definition are recreational or leisure activities outside of one’s career or workplace. You can have hobbies that require exercise and can not just be something you enjoy, but they can keep you in shape as well, such as playing sports, mountain biking, lifting weights or working out. You can have hobbies that stimulate the mind, such as arts and crafts, chess or other board-games, reading clubs, crosswords, or other things. You can also have hobbies just to get away from things and take your mind off the world, such as playing the guitar or other musical instruments.
Do not let money or time hold you back. Variety is the spice of life, and it is time to spice up your life a bit. Just sit down and think of anything you would like to do, anything you would like to pursue. Write it down. Write down how you can do it and what it will take, and then go after it. I have found that just half-an-hour a day of doing something can really make a difference. It might take some time to develop some new hobbies, but it will be worth it in the end. Find some new hobbies at Variety Access, your online hobby store and more.

Everyone knows that stress isn’t good – that it can get on top of us and affect our wellbeing. What most people don’t realize is that stress can effect much more than just our mood or mental state. Stress has been shown to have a detrimental effect on many parts of our body and indeed people’s health in general.
Stress is one of the most widespread afflictions in modern life – everyone suffers from it in their day to day lives.
It’s because of this that most people don’t recognize stress for what it is until it is affecting their mental and physical health in a negative way. Most people don’t realize they are stressed until it becomes a major issue for them.
Of course, some of the effects that stress has affect us on a mental level but it can have an effect all over the body.
High blood pressure and heart rate have both been linked to stress so if you find your blood pressure is too high a lot of the time then you should act to reduce the amount of stress you have in your life. This can reduce your health problems and leave you happier and more content.
There is no such thing as a safe level of stress, obviously, we will all have stress in our lives, but decreasing the stress you experience every day will always have positive effects in your life. Considering the health implications of prolonged stress it is better to actively act to cut down the stress that you experience in your life.
Reducing your stress is not difficult, a little time spent planning how to change your life can make a huge difference.
A small effort will go a long way to making you feel better about yourself and others.
The first thing that you should do is to sit down and make a list of all the things that are causing you to be stressed out. It doesn’t matter whether or not you think something should be stressful – write down anything that genuinely is stressful to you. Then, go through the list again and see which things you can eliminate from your life.
Of course, you won’t be able to eliminate everything that causes you stress – you will probably still have to go work, and deal with people you find difficult. The important thing is that there will be several items on your list that you can take steps to avoid and eventually eliminate from your life or at least cope better with.
One of the key ways to reduce stress is also one of the simplest – relax! Relaxation time is extremely important in your day – a time to unwind and forget all the stress of your day. You should schedule your relaxation time and let nothing interrupt it, it is as important to your health as exercise in avoiding the negative effects of stress.
Exercise is another excellent way to defeat stress. Exercise will clear your head; make you feel better, and more confident. It is also excellent for your general health so make exercise a part of your day.
If you start working on stress reduction, you should start seeing improvements in your health right away. Also, even if you are not noticing that your health is improving right away, you should still feel confident that it is – the more relaxed you are, the better you should feel. Start working on stress reduction today, and have a healthier life tomorrow!

I would like to relate a couple of Feng Shui stories from my own personal experience. One is from a while back, and the other is from today. Although they were different places, there are some similarities between them.
About 12 years ago I decided to move up into the mountains. I found a nice one bedroom apartment. It was in the basement of a house, close to a highway. I could get to work in 13 minutes. I was worried about snow, but my car had good tires and as it turned out later, everything was pretty much ok in that area. Anyway, I signed the lease with my landlord and moved in. The next day he called me up. He was really mad. My deposit check had bounced. I made it good (I was overdrawn only a few dollars), but when I went over there to give him the money, he was drunk. He told me that he wished he had held out for a higher rent. This is not a good thing to hear from your new landlord. There was nothing I could say or do about that, but I did resolve to pay the rent in cash, on time, every single time after that, just so he wouldn’t have anything else to complain about. So you could say I was intimidated by him.
When I moved in, I realized that here was a major authority figure in my life and I’m having a confrontation with him. I’m not the type that likes confrontations. I started wondering about the Feng Shui of my apartment. Up until this point in my understanding of Feng Shui, I had not really been concerned with the directions or elements. I had been pretty much using Black Hat Feng Shui and just the 9 Cures method of balancing things. This situation required more investigation.
It turned out that the kitchen had an unusual shape. There was a triangular corner in the kitchen that pointed North. The triangle is the shape of Fire, and since this pointed North, which was the direction of Water, it indicated that there was a conflict between Fire and Water, which are opposites. I had to look up in a Feng Shui book what to do. In order to balance the conflict between Fire and Water, which are opposites, you need to introduce the Wood element. I put a hanging plant in that corner and after that things got better. I can’t say they were ever great, but I did like that place in many ways. I lived there about a year and a half, and had to move out because the landlord wanted his mother to live there.
My next story is more recent and is about where I live now. Yesterday I started thinking about something that I noticed a while back. My front door opens to a street that runs past my house, parallel to the front door. My house is set pretty close to the road, probably about 10 feet back from it. On the other side of the road is an embankment, about 10 feet high, covered with some kind of bush. This embankment runs the length of the street, parallel to it, probably about a quarter mile in length. Up on top of this embankment is another street. There is a white picket fence that runs along the top of this embankment, which abuts the sidewalk on the side of this upper street.
Almost directly across from my front door is a narrow set of steps set into the dirt of the embankment, leading down from this upper street to the one running past my house. So when I look out the door I see (from bottom to top): porch, sidewalk, street, embankment, narrow steps, white picket fence, then some apartment buildings. I was looking out my front door at this situation a couple of months ago and wondered if it was affecting the feng shui of my house somehow. I figured it out today. I had read some more of my Feng Shui books last night and found a situation just like this.
It turns out that if your front door faces North and there is a hill in front of it, this will block the energy in the career area of your home. (North is the direction associated with Career.) Hmm. Sounds familiar. I started looking for a job earlier this year and after a few months I noticed something. Of all the applications I put in, nobody called me back. I found that very strange. When I did find a job, the people seemed very controlling and I felt quite stifled. Now I know why.
It’s because of that hill and fence in front of my front door, and the narrow little opening with the steps coming down. This indicates blockage in the career area and a very narrow, difficult path to go upwards. Sounds like my job and the people I work for…. Now you will probably say “But the economy is bad….” and you would have a point. However, I did check my theory out with Cat (one of Foretell’s psychics) and she said I was correct.
The next question was what to do about it. In Feng Shui, it is commonly suggested to put an aquarium in the wealth area to increase wealth, so I thought perhaps an aquarium (the career area is in the North, and the element of the North is water) would increase the energy of that area, since it apparently was being blocked from outside my house. Again I checked this with Cat and she seemed to think it would work. It will probably cost at least $100 to try this out. There are other ways to activate the energy in the North area of my house. One other option might be to put a lamp, or a mirror in the North, but I think the aquarium would be the more appropriate choice.
There are a few other strange incidents that happened in the last year that I think might be related to Feng Shui. About 6 months ago I heard a loud “thump” on the side of the house while I was asleep on the couch. I got up and opened the front door to look outside and see what was going on. There was a guy up on the steps across the street. I knew he had thrown something at my house, I just didn’t know what it was. (It was a beer bottle.) I yelled at him to stop. He started yelling and swearing at me but he didn’t make any sense so I figured he was on drugs. He said “this is America. You can’t just live anywhere you want.” I closed the door and waited because I didn’t really want to get into a fight with him. Eventually he went away. I called the police and they sent a patrol car down the street. I saw him one more time about 2 days later, and never saw him again. Kat said that he mistook me for someone else that he was mad at.
Another time, a couple of months ago, I came home and there were about 10 kids sitting on those steps across the street. I left the door open and watched them. I felt that not all of them were bad, but there were a few that were up to no good. I wasn’t sure what they were going to do, but I just wanted to make sure nothing happened to my house. I got on the phone. I wanted them to think I was calling the police. I pointed to them, to make them think that I was talking about them. I went back into my office to look up the phone number for the police, and sure enough there was a knock on the door.
A young girl who was part of the group was on my porch and wanted to know what I was doing. She was concerned that I was calling the police when the kids had done nothing wrong. I told her basically that I hadn’t seen them do anything wrong, that they were free to do whatever they wanted, but that I just wanted to make sure nothing bad happened to my house. I figured that was fair, logical and reasonable. She went back to them and told them what I said. After a few minutes they went away and I never saw them together again.
For the most part, ever since I moved in here I have been afraid that someone would burn my house down or break into it. It was to the point where I was sleeping on the sofa so if someone came in I would hear it right away, and there were times I was afraid to leave because I thought someone might be watching me and waiting for an opportunity to break in. Now I am pretty sure these incidents and feelings are related to the Feng Shui here.
My house has a big open doorway from the living room into the kitchen, so that the front door, this doorway and the large window in my kitchen are all in a line. What that means is that a lot of energy from the North can go very quickly into the South. It’s similar to the basement apartment – a conflict between Water and Fire.
It is possible that I should have a curtain across this large doorway into the kitchen, but I am reluctant to do that because so much light comes in to the kitchen from the south facing bay window. It would make the rest of the place pretty dark, unless it is a translucent beaded curtain. In the last week or two I put two large plants (Wood) in this doorway, to slow down the energy coming from the front door (North) into the kitchen (South.), and I feel like I can relax more now. It’s kind of interesting because it’s basically the same conflict (Water and Fire) that I had going in the basement apartment 10 years ago, just with a little different twist to it.

Using all Six Senses to Be More Romantic
By: Heidi Richards
“Knowing what your partner wants and needs is your sixth sense or intuition at work.” – Heidi Richards
Call it intuition. Call it ESP. We all have it and can use it to create a lasting romantic relationship. When our sixth sense is in full gear, it’s like one of those timeless moments between two people when nothing else in the world matters and no one else exists. I’m not talking sex, here. I am talking when two people connect on a level beyond the physical. Let me explain. I was married for 16 years to a good man; he was a good father and a good provider. In fact, we seldom had any conflict in our lives. For some women that might be enough. And yet something was missing from our relationship. He just didn’t “get” me. Even after 16+ years of marriage, he didn’t really know what I liked or what made me tick. It was inevitable that we would not stay together forever.
Then I met a man whom I have been with for nearly 14 years. It was like he knew instinctively what I liked without me even telling him. Rarely does a day goes by when one of us doesn’t call each other and talk about something the other was actually thinking or go to the store and buy dinner (just what the other was craving without verbalizing that craving). We tease one another about how keen our sixth sense is at certain times. I find it very romantic. I call it a connection to something more and greater than the physical senses are able to distinguish.
And how about the other five senses? How do we know just which senses we should focus on? If they work to create the kind of romance your partner appreciates, then I believe you have what it takes to increase the power of your sixth sense, far beyond touch, taste, sight, smell and sound. Here are some tips for using all six senses to be more romantic (excerpted from the book Romance on a Budget)
Sight
Look into my Eyes (#11) – When you gaze into each others eyes, everyone else seems to disappear. And looking intensely at one another can send a message to your partner that can lead to better things.
Sound
Listen … (#37) – Do you want to know a secret? Being a good listener is an art. Some people are natural good listeners, others need practice. When you truly listen to one another it demonstrates that you care about what they are saying. It’s most important communication skill in a successful long-term relationship. If you really want to know your partner’s likes and dislikes, wants and desires, perfect the art of listening.
Taste
Hungry for love (#120) – Visit a local fruit or vegetable grove together and pick your own. Take your goodies home and cook up something wonderful, then feed it to each other. MMMMMM… Good!
Smell
The scent of you (#46) Spray your perfume or cologne on the phone most often used by your partner. Or all the phones in the house. This will surely kick the romance meter up a few notches. It’s especially effective if you are going out of town.
Touch
Touch me in the morning (#115) – … in the afternoon, in the evening. Give your partner a massage. Buy some fragrant massage oils and watch the tension turn to pleasure. Take turns.
Intuition
A Hard Day’s Night (#30) – After a hard day’s work, surprise your partner by having a steaming hot bath ready and waiting. Light the bathroom with candles and yummy scents. After bathing and drying your partner off, show him/ her to your candle lit boudoir, where the bed is ready and waiting with satin sheets and rose petals and soft music is playing. This is where you will proceed to rub his/her body down with scented body massage oil. After working up an appetite, have a romantic dinner ready, waiting to be served.
Developing and using all six senses in romance can create a connection that goes deeper – to our souls. Knowing what your partner wants and needs is your sixth sense or intuition at work. When you develop your sixth sense in romance you will instinctively know which of the other five to use when and in which combination to use them.
