Music and Meditation

Music or more basically sound has been a great tool for assistance in achieving ones desired state of mind for many, many thousands of years (even before modern man spoke his first word). There is a certain vibration or sound that stimulates the part of the human brain that is associated with meditation and or prayer (of all faiths); this includes chimes, bells, crickets, mantras, chants, and the sound of silence to name just a few.

Certain assisting aspects of sound can be measured scientifically however, scientific research has only just began, as we are aware of, certain aspects can not be statistically recorded (yet); The study of how human individual behavior is motivated by sound (prayer, meditation, general behavior) is a part of Transpersonal Psychology.

Choir music, or music in general has been and still is used to motivate and assist in creating a desired frame of thought. As we have evolved as human beings so have our tools and methods and sounds. The modern human thorax or voice box is unlike that of any other creature known to man, and appears designed. The modern human voice box is responsible for modern humans ability to speak and form languages.

Sound as a key factor in the evolution of all nature. The sound of a mantra, or chant (group or individual), bell, ratel or chime, forest or desert sounds can assist in various types of meditations and prayers weather it is group or individual. Brahms and Beethoven (all classical composers were commissioned by the church to create a mood or feeling) to name a couple of the greatest composers of all time only created master pieces after commission by the church or wealthy families. Classical compositions were way out of reach to common folk however the power of sound has been known sense the beginning; from cricket to composer.

Where to start? Well, it was intense. In a great way. I left feeling amazing and clear- mind, body, and soul. First let me begin by telling you all that The Autumn Goddess Retreat was a local festival over the weekend that supported a local domestic violence center in my community.

There’s food, music, workshops, art, performances, interactive performances and drum circles, practitioners and healers, local vendors and there were even some tarot readers there. I didn’t get a reading because I prefer to get phone readings though.

Me and my friends were so overwhelmed with everything that was there. We started with the aromatherapy side of the festival and my friend signed up for a free 15 minute table massage using essential oils. I had purchased a small jar of sugar scrub with do Terra essential oils lavender and wild orange. It smells amazing and I used it last night and tonight and It feels wonderful.

After that we walked along and there was a bunch of art and more aromatherapy stations and we were looking at all of the stuff and got free candles that smelled amazing compliments of the Domestic Violence Center of Chester County. We then went and watched some more of the performers which at that time were some improv belly dancers and they were awesome. After they did their performance they then taught us how to do the art of belly dancing.

We then went inside where we found free samples from a local place called The Salt Vault. They gave us cute little satin bags filled with a sample bag of their Himalayan Salt Detox Bath. It’s made up of 84 essential materials and it’s good for skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis. It cleanses the bacteria, toxins, and other debris in the skin and restores energy levels with the relaxation it provides.

We then went over to a Reiki master who had a table full of pendants for sale that are for healing or strengthening different things in different people. She tried the BioDisc first (for expanding energy, raises vibration, and clearing and lightening.) I didn’t feel anything. She then held up a couple more one of them The Star (emotional balance, dancing energy, joyful and uplifting) gave me a warm feeling in my 3rd eye area but she asked if she could try one more first before settling on that one and I said yes. She then held up The Heart.

The Heart expands the heart chakra and love, it also strengthens lungs and heart. When she held that up to me I felt like I was being lifted off the ground and being pushed back. I’m not a small girl, when that happened I was so overwhelmed she asked if I was okay and I said yeah and explained what I felt and she said that was the one for me then. I purchased it and wore it around for a while but had to take it off after a little while because it was super powerful because my mind was so free at that point. I am wearing it now though.

We then went back up to the outside and watched more performances and participated in a drum circle which was super fun being a part of that. It was calming and took me away to another world for 30 minutes too. I felt in tune with everyone even though I probably wasn’t. (haha) My friends 4 month old was so relaxed he fell asleep to the sound of the drum circle. At that point I was so relaxed I probably could have fallen asleep as well.

We then walked back down and went to the other side of the building and there were more venders and healers over on the side. There was a sound healer who took a didgeridoo and some other tools and helped us relax with healing sounds and vibrations. I’ve never had anything like that done before so I thought that was very neat.

(My Favorite) I walked over to this booth full of bracelets and I was immediately drawn to one but kept looking at others and the lady and her daughter explained to me that you’re supposed to pick the one you’re immediately drawn to because theres a reason I’m drawn to it she then lifted up the box the bracelet was on and there was a card, mine read “Blue Goldstone – Opalite – Swarovski. Stone of ambition/builds energy/courage/positive attitude. Increases drive/confidence/helps reduce stomach tension/benefits arthritic conditions. Helpful to bones/ painful joints/circulation. Considered an all-around healing stone/helps combat fatigue. It also purifies the blood/kidneys. Useful in improving communication on all levels. Alleviates depression promotes relaxation. Master healer.

I love it! Its beautiful and it has the Philly “Love” charm on it and a sun and moon toggle clasp. Its very pretty and I love that it called to me and it has everything I need. I am wearing that now as well.

I then got a fist sized chunk of Citrine that vibrated energy when i held my hand over it so I had to get it its sitting next to me on my desk right now. Citrine is said to cleanse the aura and promote a happy disposition. It helps you overcome intellectual and emotional issues. It also has a positive influence on relationships, and helping perceive obstacles and their solution in an intelligent and optimistic manner.

Citrine relates to the 3rd chakra which is all about self-esteem, personal power and abundance. Basically being able to trust yourself making it possible to exercise your personal power in a responsible way and make good decisions. In turn, those decisions may lead to an abundance including but not limited to money. It can also help fight depression and mood swings because of the effect it has on mental clarity.

All in all it was an exciting day and I’m still riding the high from all of the clarity I got from the day. I have all my special goodies from the day too that will last me forever (except the sugar scrub but now I know how to make it) and I have a clear mind and I feel better about life and I feel wonderful.

In the beginning of the month we began our series of Foretell’s Fall Favorites. Did you miss it? Don’t worry, we will include a link to the last 3 blogs down below. Our Fall Favorites series is where readers can come visit our blog page every Wednesday and read a bit about what some of Foretell’s staff members are enjoying this September.

Week 1

Week 2

Week 3

Erin: Since this is the final blog in this series I wanted to say that this has by far been my favorite September in quite a while. The weather has been cool and crisp and even though it’s only been fall for a day at this point it feels like its been a full month of fall already. I’ve gotten to break out the hoodies and turn the air off and just open the windows and enjoy the fresh air and breeze blowing in. It’s wonderful!

I’m gonna go a little crazy now and write a bit about all I’ve gotten to do so far because it’s truly been a great start to the season. I’ve made some time to get back into my art and have been exploring and getting back into painting with different mediums. I get to watch my dog freak out and run through the leaves that have started to fall and into leaf piles like a maniac and she’s so happy and it makes me happy to watch her.

I got some great new fall clothes for next to nothing with some great fall sales and have been able to wear hoodies and scarves earlier than I have in many years. There’s been bonfires with friends, flea markets, and last night I had a very cool night at a new spot in Philadelphia at a hookah lounge then sat outside and enjoyed the first official night of fall for a while.

All in all it’s shaping up to be a wonderful season!

Laura: September, In my area, the air gets cooler and its perfect smores weather. It’s the beginning of the fall and the turning of the leaves. Halloween is coming and then of course my favorite holiday (Thanksgiving). It’s the start of my favorite time of the year. As september goes on I’ve been encouraging myself in seeking out more nature in my life. By looking around for local parks, reserves, and any type of nature walk. I’ve found some hot spots  in some wonderful hide a ways. There’s one in particular that’s a man made lake that i’ve been visiting. The view at the marina is just plain  peaceful.

As this season rolls on i’ll be enjoying the jumping on leaf piles. Pumpkin spice is just added to everything and hoodies are slowly coming back.

Careers of The Zodiac– Libra

September 23, 2014, 11:02 AM

By: Erin

As Autumn rolls in and the weather balances out were its not too hot and not too cold yet… it’s actually kind of perfect, we meet our 7th sign of the zodiac chart, the symbol of the scales; Libra. This sign is often described as being very harmonious and charming and are very well liked because of their devotion to the things and people they respect and love be it a job, a pet, friends, family, etc.

Libras are very sociable and like to work with people. That might sound pretty general but for this sign it goes further as they are the type of people who like to build actual relationships with their co-workers and hang out outside of the office. Libras are known for their excellent manners and will be the first to extend an invite to a fellow team member to join them for a bite to eat or drinks after a long day at the office or on the field.

Bringing it back to the symbol of the scales, while a lot of people would be put off by mixing business and pleasure Libra is able to do so because they do it with the mentality that it will bring a harmonious vibe into the workplace. If everyone is comfortable and pulls together it will create a balanced and relaxed atmosphere at work and will generally be a better experience for everyone day in and day out. Libras do not like conflict and avoid it at all costs so from here I will go into the first job I feel would be ideal for those born under this sign.

1. Mediator or Guidance Counselor: In this category of profession a Libra will be able to utilize their analytical skills and help solve problems for people in need of a little guidance. Libras are very diplomatic and will be very fair and show no bias towards one side or another and will always have everyone’s best interest in mind at all times. With their great people skills and their honest and trusting nature people will feel comfortable sharing issues/problems with them in order for Libra to help them come to a healthy and beneficial settlement for any party involved.

In this profession Libras will feel fulfilled with knowing that they are helping people solve problems and leading them down the road to their fresh start, whatever it may be involving. Knowing they have eased someone of some type of hardship in anyway is enough to make this sign want to smack that snooze button 10 times each morning.

2. Creative Content Supervisor or Manager: In this profession a Libra would be able to use their creative skills on various levels. Daily tasks of gathering information from different sources and constantly networking with a variety of people will thrill this social sign and keep them very happy. As a high level creative content professional Libra will be constantly busy and utilizing their multitasking skills working on different projects from public relations to marketing and advertising and graphic designing.

Utilizing their intuitive abilities Libras are sure to go straight to the top in this profession because of their people pleasing ways. They get to know their clients needs and wants and turn out assignments that are worth millions simply by truly listening and knowing their client and turning their thoughts into a true vision.

3. Lawyer: Libras would make the BEST lawyers. It all goes back to similarities of the mediator profession but this is being able to take it to the next level and working for the judicial system. Libras tend to cower at confrontation but WILL fight for what they feel is fair.

Libras can be very persuasive and turn the charm all the way up in situations to make people listen to them and see their point of view. They will do whatever it takes to show people cold hard facts to back up why they know this person is innocent or guilty in a case so that it is completely balanced and fair. They don’t fight dirty and will keep a fair fight.

Totems and Methods of Usage For Meditation

September 22, 2014, 12:50 AM

By: J Nighteagle

Totems can be used for meditation; one method of utilizing spirit guides or totems are to notice the creatures that enter your life or spirit path (we have many throughout our lives) and the message they bring in relation to you current life focus to assist, guide, and teach in an effort to live life happy and content.

We can utilize animal guides to guide us out of a subject that the answer to may elude us or boggle us. There is no power in the animal itself but in its meaning to you and, how you use the insight. Some times if we step away a bit, we can gain more insight into ourselves, and our environment; which is alive and possess meaning and solution. In prayer we think deeply and gain meaning through deep thought and intention; this is similar to utilizing totems.

A quiet place conducive to meditation no distractions or noise; and we do not force guidance, we ask and must follow the meaning, or determine that this is not for us and move on; never the less the major message is to respect ourselves, others, and mother nature.

If you would like more information on some aspect of fallowing spirit guides, or animal guides several sources can be found on the internet or you local book store.

Live Well…

Virgo-Libra, Cusp of Beauty

September 19, 2014, 12:00 AM

By: Adam

Heard of “Beauty and the Beast?” Me too. But have you heard of “Beauty and the Intellectual?” Beauty and the intellectual is exactly what you get on the cusp of Virgo-Libra (Cusp of Beauty), with Virgo being ruled by Mercury (messenger of the gods, ruler of awareness, communication and intellect) and Libra being ruled by Venus (the Goddess of Love).

There are two things to note about Venus before we can continue: (1.) Venus is actually the diurnal ruler of Libra, which basically means Librans have a tendency to be very outward in their expression of Venusian tendencies. Venus rules our sentiments, what we value, and the pleasure we take in life. Grace, charm, and beauty are all ruled by Venus. Through Venus we learn about our tastes, pleasures, artistic inclinations, hankerings, and what makes us happy. (2.) In Chaldean astrology each sign is broken down into decans (10 degree/day periods, approximately) and each decan has its own luminary as an influence, with three rulers per sign. Both the 3rd decan of Virgo and the first decan of Libra are ruled by Venus. So if you are born in the Cusp of Beauty, your Venusian qualities will have a tendency to be quite pronounced–you might even say you are a double-Venus.

Some things to note about our beloved Virgo-Libra cuspers:

Date Range: September 19 to September 25.

What they need: Virgo-Libra cuspers need to keep their lives in order and everything running smoothly and looking good in order to prevent anxiety. Taskmasters please raise your hand. From an outsider looking in perspective, this makes Virgo-Libra cuspers look like they have a vice-grip on control. If you live with one you probably have a chore list issued weekly and have to plan ahead of time to avoid the evil eye.

Relationships: If you are in a relationship with a Virgo-Libra, they don’t want to be a priority per se, but you better be real skilled at making the relationship a priority.

Strengths: Attractive, intellectual, communicative, artistic, social, sensuous. The sense of beauty comes out best when the Virgo-Libra cuspers are productive/creative–e.g., Bruce Springsteen.

Weaknesses: Allergic to complacency, detached, perfectionist, nervous, strict. My father once told me that most perfectionists were fake, that they didn’t really care about being perfect, they were simply frightened of being wrong; fear of being wrong is not perfection. Virgo-Libra cuspers, on the other hand, are the real deal perfectionists. They get off on setting the bar at new heights and they view mistakes as learning material.

What they love: Objects of beauty, including people, art, fashion, home furnishings, nature and any loveliness or finery you can look at, buy or attach to your being.

Name of Cusp: The Cusp of Beauty.

Cusp of Beauty Famous Personalities: Jimmy Fallon, Sophia Loren, Bill Murray, Stephen King, Scott Baio (Chachi), Patrick Breeding, Ray Charles, Mickey Rooney, Ani DiFranco, Joan Jett, Jeremy Irons, Ray Charles, Bruce Springsteen (the Boss) and the list goes on.

Next month: Libra-Scorpio! Cusp of Drama & Criticism. Yikes.

Our Fall Favorites series is where readers can come visit our blog page every Wednesday and read a bit about what some of Foretell’s staff members are enjoying this September.

Erica: I like to unclutter my clutter. A lot of people like to Spring Clean but I like to Fall Simple. I don’t know if its the clean crisp air or all the great smells outside right now but Autumn is when I like to open all the windows, freshen up the house, clean and simplify. Now is a perfect time to yard sale it, declutter, organize, start that paint project you have been putting off and plant trees and bushes to be ready to bloom in spring. Decluttering your space and doing yard work is great exercise, but its also a way to zen it out, meditate, clear your mind and get in touch with your inner self and nature. I make it a practice that while I’m cutting back bushes, trees and overgrowth in my yard, I like to think and compare it to all the junk I need to cut out of my life and simplify. It feels awesome!

Rocky: One of my favorite quotes about this time of year that has always stuck with me is “Autumn- The time of Harvest. That which Spring brought forth and the Summer matured is now ready for reaping. Plants stretch toward the sky saluting the Sun; plump fruits, the seeds of which sprouted such a short time ago, drop lusciously into the harvesters hands; stalks of grain dance merrily to the rhythm of the singing scythes; the final kernel is placed in storage and looked away against the coming of Winter. Tonight, excitement is in the air. The communal fire is burning brightly as loved ones began to gather for the celebration of one of the highest holidays of the year, a special time of giving thanks for the life-sustaining fruits of Mother Earth. In Love all is cast, The Great Ones are giving praise and are honored, the cakes and wine are shared by all.” Like I said I don’t remember who wrote this but it means more and more to me every year that goes by.

Erin: I’m big on scented candles and making my home smell cozy. This time of year I like to make a simmer pot mix of my own potpourri that’s a mixture of 1 cut up apple, 1 orange peel, 1 tbs vanilla extract, 2 large cinnamon sticks, 1 tbs cloves, and almond extract so it fills up the house with all these delicious fall scents. All you need to do is place all these ingredients into a pot of about 1 1/2 cups of water and let simmer throughout the day. Keep adding a bit of water from time to time to make sure it doesn’t dry out. You can reuse the mix for up to 3 days by storing it in the fridge.

For his last animal totem, J Nighteagle teaches us about The Skunk as a totem.

The Skunk represents reputation.

Many careers and personal lives have been ruined or accelerated based on reputation, (we need to remember that information is power), weather true or not. The Skunk is a cute little creature, that tends to keep to him self and his species that by reputation only becomes defensive when his space is violated; when this happens he sprays   this is not a physical attack but, an attack on the senses; this is one of the first lessons animals learn in the wild; humans by movies, reading, and in actual life.

A persons reputation will follow them throughout there life in one way or another; a good reputation in your chosen field is essential to advancement; a bad reputation (anger, losing ones temper, not getting along with people or an argumentative nature is not conducive to a pleasurable atmosphere. In this modern world a persons reputation often precedes actual contact, and is the bases of trust and effectiveness, in all endeavors.

Skunk people are very magnetic and put out positive vibes; for this reason the Totem of the skunk is very positive (individuals are happy and magnetic). Skunk people have a great tendency to stand up for what is right in them selves and others, and detract automatically from an uncomfortable or threatening situation leaving behind a message that says leave me alone and do not follow.

Contrary the Totem of the Skunk means that one should pay attention to their reputation; It will follow you, in life and career Are you putting out bad or uncomfortable vibes, or possess a reputation of helping or assisting others; just being a happy or positive individual. Skunk people are very conscious of there environment, and effects of all concerned.

This week Erin lets us in on her favorite skin care products and even gives a DIY recipe for fellow brave crafty souls.

Erin: All my life I’ve been very lucky in that even throughout middle school and high school I was never prone to break outs or acne and I got away with using bar soap on my face. I have recently come to the sad realization that I am becoming an age that requires using products that you cannot purchase at the dollar general and I am going to have to actually start using “grown up” products on my skin to keep it fresh and healthy.

I have a bit of a dry skin problem on my face and I’ve asked my friends for advice and while great advice and much appreciated I’ve found that most often I find I spend the money on a product only to come out looking like someone has burned a layer of my skin off. So I did what any Gen-X girl would do and took to the internet and found that people with my same problem had great results with the Neuteogena Naturals line and were saying to start with just the purifying facial cleanser and follow up with the multivitamin moisturizer so I figured, why not?

Two weeks in and I gotta say my face is feeling great. It soothed the burning from the Cindy Crawford stuff my mom gave me to use that tore my skin literally off my face. It’s great. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who has sensitive skin like myself or just has had problems finding a face wash or moisturizer that works for them. I got mine at Walmart so it’s about $3 cheaper than other retailers.

Side note, I was also blessed with eczema on my scalp and hands that tends to flare up when the weather had it’s little hissy fits and can’t decide if it wants to be happy and warm or mean and cold. My mom-mom blessed me with a lot of things but she passed down her skin problems to me haha. BUT, after 20+ years of dermatologists and creams and sleeping with saran wrap around my hands (yeah that was terrible when you’re 12) I have finally found an all natural recipe that works.

I found this on Pinterest and it also works for Psoriasis.

Ingredients:

20 g. / 0.7 oz. Shea Butter

15 g. / 0.53 oz. Cocoa Butter

15 g. / 0.53 oz. Sweet Almond Oil

10 g. / 0.35 oz. Castor Oil

5 g. / 0.18 oz. Neem Oil

1/8 tub Vitamin E Oil

(Optional) 5 Drops Lavender Essential Oil

Directions:

Take small sauce pan put in all oils and butters. Put into a larger sauce pan of boiling water. (Double Boiling method) Place in freezer. Wait 5 minutes slightly runny liquid opaque and add the Neem oil and vitamin E and 5 drops of Lavendar Oil. Use a whisk to mix all the ingredients together then take container of your choice (make sure that it has a tight lid so that nothing can get in to contaminate it.

I have posted a link below to the video tutorial on how to make this healing balm here so you can see for yourself how easy it is. I have made it for myself a few times.

This week he teaches us about The Crane as a Totem.

Crane represents old knowledge.

Many times in todays stressful and active life people will feel overwhelmed and the feeling of TO MUCH AT ONCE will usually be the predominate feeling. People in todays world will say that you need to keep up to succeed; if you don’t, you will lose (and to a certain extent that is correct). People will feel as if stress is a new thing, but it is not. Stressors tend to differ, however the physical effects tend to be similar. In todays world people are technologically knowledgeable and will depend on multitasking (this in itself is stressful to some). We are stressed by the speed of technology, not running from a giant Bear like our ancestors.

The Crane teaches us to go back and refer to the ways our ancestors use to deal with problems; and the answer you seek will be there. Human beings live longer these days and thus have better health care more advanced technologically, culturally and our access to world knowledge. All these sources of knowledge although new in usage are based on old traditions and this is what the Crane means: do not forget old techniques and ways; these techniques have evolved through the lives of human beings and the life we share the planet with.

Modern human beings have only been around a short time, our ancestors were around for hundreds of thousands of years, In most cases knowledge has evolved some cultures have lasted many, many generations longer then modern culture. Science is realizing this more and more all the time.

If The Crane has flown into your life; the message is look into the old ways, the answer to you current situation has been tried and has evolved in its effectiveness.
