Major Arcana_ Dance of the Archetypes

I’ve been using cards more and more in my practice.  Oracle cards and Tarot.  Mostly as a meditative, contemplative practice.  I lay the cards out by chance and see how those stories, pictures and all the thoughts and emotions they draw, how they relate to my story, my situation, my life, all of life.  I am falling in love with the dance of the archetypes in Tarot.

Before I took the time to really look at archetypical patterning in the world and in my life, I never really gave thought to the cards in relation to their greater story.  If I had Death, there was an ending and so as with all endings another beginning.  It is a card of transformation.  That was that.

But there is more to that story when I see Death is preceded by The Hanged Man, a card of surrender, acceptance and sacrifice.  And it is followed by Temperance, a card of nurture and balance.  With more of the story, I can look at the ways that I can accept Death (my new beginning) more gracefully and ways to make time to allow this transition to integrate.  How I can regain my balance.  Because just behind Temperance lies the Devil.  I know I want to feel solid in my new space before I have to deal with the drag of the material world at its worst.

The story of the archetypes through the Major Arcana resonates with the human story.  Let’s revisit the Death card and see how it may tell story in life.  Think about a change.  Let’s say a career change.  And let’s make it more interesting by putting a family in the mix and make the shift be to something completely unfamiliar but “hopefully” better.  We never know until we try right?  So you go to the point where you need to either leave or stay and quit complaining.  The crossroads, the Hanged Man.  And you choose to go. Death to the old to allow for the new.  Now hopefully you are giving yourself that healing kind of love as you make the transition to the unknown new experience.  Because no matter how much you wanted the change, there can be doubt and there probably will.  Maybe in the form of your own fears, maybe the voices of those around you, maybe the pressure of society’s standards – the Devil has reared its ugly head.   If you have given yourself the love, the Devil can’t really rattle you.  You have done the work of loving your changing self where you are.  You are too solid to be rattled. And move through the transition with grace.

I can see and relate to that story.  And there have been times when the Devil is the card I’ve drawn.  And I know now, that may mean I skipped that love part somewhere in my transition.  That I have some work to do on my balance. And if I don’t, The Tower is right behind.  So get myself back in balance or risk something falling apart.  Of course.

Yes, the Major Arcana is the story of life.  And keeping the larger story always present when you use your cards can really deepen your relationship with the cards.  Yes, I have a relationship with my cards.  The always offer me great advice.   And in the spirit of working more with the Tarot, I will be writing about each of the Major Arcana and the archetype they hold space for.  I’ll be using my two favorite decks at the moment: Celtic Wisdom (Caitlin Matthews) and The Wild Unknown (Kim Krans).  I hope you’ll join me with your deck and build a relationship of your own.

Love Ritual to Amplify Love

For those unfamiliar with crystal work, gemstones and crystals have been used for thousands of years in spiritual and healing practices.  Eastern medicine systems such as Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda use gems to balance energy and promote wellness in the body. The properties of the stones are said to emit and amplify or absorb certain elemental vibrations.  For those who find this a bit too new age-y, think of a clear quartz crystal used in a watch to hold the precision of time.  Quartz has an exact frequency that is stimulated to vibrate by the mechanism of the watch, which is calibrated to mark the seconds based on that vibration.  It keeps true time.  In energy medicine, clear quartz is used to amplify the focus of intention and to help with manifestation.  I can see the relationship.

To me precision translates to purity.  So I liken quartz to purity.  And I liken this post’s featured crystal to purity of love.  Allow me to introduce, Rose Quartz.  Rose Quartz is a beautiful pink stone that is indicated for healing the heart chakra and in times when we need to amplify the love.  Rose quartz is unique in that generally stones used for chakras match the color of the chakra. While the heart chakra is associated with green, crystals associated with heart chakra balancing and healing are both green and pink, the rose quartz being one of the most recommended.

Pink in color therapy is used for  softening matters of the heart like grief and sadness and promoting emotional love.  Interestingly, on the science side, the color pink does not have its own pure wavelength and frequency as it is a mix of the two polar opposite colors in wavelength and frequency: violet (380-450nm/680-790THz) and red (625-740nm/405-480THz).   On the healing side, this makes perfect sense to me.   Of course, the purest expression of love, the most precise,  would be found in the crystalized balanced frequency of our root (red) and crown (violet) chakras.  The two polar opposite centers of our bodies’ energetic system.  The flow between the two can only be maintained with a heart tuned in to unconditional love.  Like the quartz in a radio, rose quartz can help us tune into the frequency of pure love.

Does this mean we need only put on a rose quartz bracelet and all sadness disappears?  No.  Nothing in this world is going to do our work for us.  But rose quartz crystals can help to amplify those qualities of unconditional love like compassion, forgiveness, and nurturing when we meditate on them, focus our attention on them and express them.  That is the way of crystals.  Like tuning forks to the purest essences of their own particular blend of elements, they stay true to their expression and help us find our way back to alignment.

We can hold rose quartz in our hand or wear a rose quartz pendant when we wish to tap into its qualities.  We can lie in meditation with rose quartz on our heart centers or hold a piece between our hands as we pray.  We can place pieces of rose quartz around our home to promote the amplification of love in every one of its spaces.  We can charge distilled water with crystals and  rose essential oil or another emotionally balancing oil and spritz ourselves with it to bring ourselves back to our intention.

There are endless ways we can use rose quartz.  The most powerful are usually the ones we intuitively find on our own. The beauty of crystal energy medicine is there are no contraindications so we can feel free to play with their energies and see their effects for ourselves.  If you have used rose quartz  for your own healing and magic, please feel free to share your experiences in the comments. If you would like to work more with Rose Quartz, I have written up a simple love ritual and listed some of its common associations so you can bring in other tools to help with your heart work.

Love Ritual to Amplify Love:
Begin by honoring yourself and the love within.  Draw a rose scented bath with candles and rose quartz crystals or meditate with rose quartz on your heart to get clear and centered on your intention.

Create a sacred space and invite the elements (and directions if it is in your practice) in whatever way you feel.  Some ideas:  Place rose petals in water in the west (you can infuse rose petals in water in the waxing moonlight for added magic), place rose quartz in the north for earth, place a lit candle in the south for fire and place rose incense smoke in the east for air.

Center yourself in the middle and visualize or walk the perimeter to create a circle as your sacred space.  Center and ground and bring your awareness into the sacred space in whatever way you choose that fits your faith and practice.  Whatever way you enter a state that allows you to let go of your surroundings and commune with your source.  It can be a formal incantation or a personal heartfelt prayer centered on love and bringing more of it into your life.  Find love’s frequency and feel it filling you.  Give thanks that you can tap into this frequency and sit with it until it feels familiar.  Then ask for more.  You can offer something in return, it can be burying rose quartz under a special tree, offering whatever thing is sacred to your deity, or perform a random of act of kindness as an offering to life itself.

I am not of the belief that we have a different source nor do I believe any one faith holds the rights to salvation.  I truly believe all is love.  And however you feel intuitively guided to create a space for love in your life, trust it.  But understand, our capacity to receive love is bound only by our capacity to give love.  And our capacity to give love is proportional to our love for ourselves.  As you work your love magic remember to give yourself your unconditional love.  When you feel self love, you will vibrate with love.  And vibrations harmonious with love will naturally find their way to you.  Know you cannot force another’s love and even if you could, it would not be true.  Hold on only to love itself and be open to receiving it.  Allow the expectation of what it looks like to fall away so you can make room for something even better to manifest.

Living Energy

I think about energy a lot.  I think of everything in the context of elements and the energy that may arise from their mingling.  How to play with energy and work with energy.

Everything in this world is perceived and processed by their qualities.  And each quality has two extreme expressions and every possible expression in between.  Each quality interplaying with every other quality in the environment, altering the expressions of each other.  And all while everything is in a perpetual state of change.

This is the experience of life.   Balancing all the energies of us within then maintaining that balance within the flow of all the energies surrounding us.   Knowing all energies surrounding us are also present within us to some degree.  Knowing at some point, all is one.  We are affected by the vibrations of the energies around us, sometimes negatively and sometimes positively.  We cannot always control the energies surrounding us.  But we are always responsible for the way we express our own energy.  And I believe taking full responsibility for the energy we express is the first step in moving towards a collective higher consciousness.

I’ve been more mindful about listening to my body.  It usually gives me my first clues as to how the energies at play affect me.  If I feel my guard go up, I look more deeply at the scene.  I go past the gut of my visceral, animal self and move to the heart, the bridge to my higher self.  Here I discern the source of the feeling.  Am I defensive because this is a sore spot for me right now?  Am I defensive because this person is deliberately trying to make me feel small?  Or do I feel defensive because some truth was exposed that I’m not willing to accept?

Once I have my answer, I can respond instead of reacting to the energies at play.  Responses come from a balanced place.  Reactions are more volatile.  And there are places and times for both.  But when I have the time (and the composure!), I like to respond.

Looking at everything as elements and qualities that we perceive, helps me maintain my neutral mind somehow.  Life is the grandest psychological, biological, and spiritual science experiment and I am a willing student of its science.  Oddly this objective approach, that seems like it would be a cold way to go through life,  has offered me the warmth of deep spiritual nurture.  In the separation of self, when I am able to apply it in the moment, I find the space for communion with the divine intelligence of life. And I remember the frequency I hope to resonate with and express in tune with that frequency.  Most often, the tune is love.

I am and always will be a work in progress.  I still hit my low notes.  But I know this practice is my way to understanding and resonating at my highest level.  I thought I would share as maybe it can offer you the same.  Or maybe it will compel you to share how you navigate the energies in our world.  All of us ultimately must find our own way, but sometimes sharing your way offers the inspiration someone needed to find theirs.
