The Chariot

By: Nikki Savage

We have journeyed from innocence to authority.  We have moved from understanding ourselves, our world and ourselves in relationship to our world.  Then we moved to ourselves in relationship to others.  Last time we met the Lovers and now the Chariot awaits us.

It isn’t a carriage and the distinction between the two suggests the true essence of this card.  The Chariot is driven by us, by the strength of our will. The Chariot is our ride.  And when it enters our life, it is time to decide where we wish to go.

In the Celtic Wisdom deck (Caitlin Matthews) the Chariot is called the Mover of Energy.   It depicts the Celtic horse goddess Epona who embodies the force that can move us across whatever terrain may lie ahead to reach our goals. Its Ogham tree is the mighty Oak.  The soul wisdom of the card asks, “Which energies need to be harnessed now?”

The Chariot in the Wild Unknown deck (Kim Krans) shows a horse with a sun, a moon and a pentacle, which I see as the material world, all in alignment.  The horse will not move without the confidant rider.  Once we set our sights and decide the way we wish to go, we are ready to ride. When we are sure of our own ability and worthiness to mount our steed, and know that the path we choose is aligned with our Truth, our steed will not fail us.

When the Chariot shows up in our lives, it is time to go.  It is time to move towards the places we wish to be in this life.  The energy is with us. Though if reversed, we may wish to be mindful that our advancement is not at the expense of another.  Any triumph to be had on the back of this horse must be honorable or the victory will be hollow.  There is a reason we learn to find the love in what we desire before we are offered a ride.  The Lovers taught us to discriminate between true and false desires.  If the card is reversed, it may be wise to test our desires against our truths one more time before we set off. Once we have that clarity, the horse is waiting.  Are we willing to take the reins?

Major Arcana

By: Nikki Savage

As we continue along our path through the Major Arcana of the tarot, we have now received the wisdom and sustenance of our father and mother.  We leave the home of the Emperor and Empress.  Like every child grown, we are off to create a way of our own.

But before we are off to experience the world and find ourselves within it we must develop one last skill.  We must find a tuning fork that resonates with our truest voice.  We must develop a practice that we can use to make sure we are staying true to ourselves along the way.  And we must seek our own higher source of knowledge and insight.   We need to develop a practice of listening to our inner knowing as we learned with the High Priestess and a practice restoring our souls in the grace of the mother.  Then we practice the art and skill in this world as we learned from the Magician and can project the authority over our lives we found under the watch of the father.

In the Celtic Wisdom tarot the Hierophant is known as the Rememberer of Lore.  It depicts the the Ogma, god of Language and Eloquence in the background behind a Celtic poet.  The poets, or bards, were the keeper of the stories.  The stories were to help us learn from others choices.  They were historical and divine stories.  Its Ogham tree association is the Gorse.  The Gorse became symbolic of the sun as their yellow blooms shine year round.  The Wild Unknown shows us a raven holding a key.  Ravens are extremely intelligent.  Their ability to speak our tongue led to them being known as powerful messengers and oracles in many traditions.

Major Arcana The Emperor

By: Nikki Savage

We are just leaving the arms of the Empress along our way through the Major Arcana, where we learned the capacity to hold creation and nurture its growth.  We discovered abundance but also learn we cannot hoard it if we truly want to grow and prosper.  We cannot have our experience if we stay in our mother’s embrace but we do need to come home to her and feel it from time to time.

Of course the mother only feels safe letting her still foolish young magician, the one who is just learning to read the stars and hear the moon.  Of course she can only give over this young traveler to the trusted hands of the father of the tarot, the Emperor.  He still offers the nurture of a parent.  The mother teaches with her abundant love, one that is always available with the soul is impoverished.  But she knows we cannot overstay or else miss our chance to discover who we are.  When we come to stand before the Emperor, it is time to understand our own authority in our lives.

The Celtic Wisdom tarot knows the Emperor as the Keeper of Harmony and depicts the Teutatis, the Ruler of the People.  It is a card of leadership.  The sort that inspires confidence.  The Ogham tree associated with this card is Bramble.  And much like a good leader, Bramble thrives on any terrain and holds the space it occupies.

In the Wild Unknown,  the Emperor is a tree in shadow against the light of the sun.   We no longer need to seek the light within, the Empress taught us how we can tap into that when we do.  The Emperor asks us to see by the light of day and forge a clear vision of where we stand and how we wish to grow.  As a father, he also teaches us the importance of leading in a way that is harmonious.  The father knows his family is strongest when they work together.

When the Emperor arrives at our door, he would like us to move confidently along our path. To move with purpose and to inspire others to do the same.  His lesson is to trust your own authority in the situation or if we feel we may have be abusing or misusing it, then we must seek to remember its origin within us.  When we own ourselves fully and honestly and trust in our own power, we will find a sureness of step that will have us ready to walk our walk through the world.

Major Arcana – The Lovers

major arcana the lovers

By: Nikki Savage

We continue to make our way through the archetypes of the Major Arcana.  We have moved from learning the language to learning to use our own voices.  We have formed a budding idea of who we are now and who we aspire to be.  Here we begin to put ourselves out in the world.  If we are true to our source of divinity and authority, our natural expression is one of love.  And so of course, here we meet love in all the ways it is expressed in the world.  Here we learn how to relate.  We also learn our way with desire and how to discern if what we desire is fleeting or lasting.  If what we desire is true.

Here we are met by the Lovers of the tarot.  We leave the home, knowing ourselves and begin to move towards building a home of our own. At this point in the story the fool has some self knowledge and has learned from the stories of how the structures of this world came to be.  We know how to contemplate matters and understand there is a higher truth above our singular experience.  And now we set out to gain new experience and learn how we relate to others. How we move with others who are on their own journeys.  And we begin to learn what pulls at us.  What we are attracted to.  And we begin to develop relationships that offer us opportunities to glimpse ourselves in a new light.  We learn to test our new found desires against the Truth of who we are.

The Celtic Wisdom tarot calls this card the Lover of Devotion.  The Lover is associated with the Rowan tree in the Celtic Ogham alphabet.  The Rowan is a symbol of protection against tricks and illusions and staying true to ourselves.  The Wild Unknown shows a pair of Canadian geese, who mate for life, in harmonious and joyful flight.

The Lovers card may be a cue to look for love and romance in our lives.   It could also be asking us to make sure we are not led by false desires.  It always asks us to stay true to that highest love and seek harmony in the situation.  The Lovers remind us there is always love available.  Sometimes we may need to look for it.

Major Arcana – Empress III

By: Nikki Savage

As we continue our journey through the Major Arcana, we have met the world with innocent eyes, too open to carry fear.  As fools, we were introduced to the elements that move through the universe.  We begin to understand its ways. Then we begin then to learn how we can be a force of our own.  We are ready to begin down a chosen path.  We learn of our own will as Magicians.  And no sooner than we begin down a path with purpose in the world, we realize that the elements don’t always lend us a hand.  Enter the High Priestess to teach us to pause and remember our interior world. To listen to the universe speaking through our intuition.  We learn to balance our energy equally to the outer, active life and the inner, contemplative life.

Now that the balance of our projective and reflective (masculine/feminine) nature is understood we are welcomed by the mother of the tarot, the Empress.  We are given the nurturing mamma love, the fertile ground to continue to create our way through this life.  Once we understand our dual nature, we must understand how to own all that it can encompass.  She offers us the grace we need to do that work.

In the Celtic Wisdom tarot she is named the Shaper of Growth who offers us her abundance and teaches us how to properly accept it.  The Ogham tree associated with the Shaper is the Hawthorn, a harbinger of spring and rebirth.  Medicinally, Hawthorn berries have been used to strengthen the heart.  Much like a mother’s love.

The Wild Unknown shows a tree light and colorful against a dark night.  The mother holds the space for creation.  She is always there to root into when we need to be held ourselves.  The illuminated tree may be a reminder that we need to pay her a visit if we need the grace of light on an otherwise dark night.
