Valentines Day Superstitions

It was often believed that a woman could determine the kind of man she would marry by the first bird she saw on Valentine”s Day.

Black bird = priest, clergyman or religious figure.

Dove = A good hearted man.

Goldfinch = a rich man ( especially if it’s a yellow gold finch ).

Sparrow = A happy man.

Hawk = A soldier, a warrior or brave man.

Crossbill = an argumentative or bad- tempered man.

Robin = a sailor.

Bluebird =   a happy man.

Owl = a man who would not live long.

Woodpecker = The woman would never marry.

These are superstitions and not true omens. A thorough knowledge of the birds in the individuals environment may prove that there is a greater likelihood to encounter certain birds every day, while never encountering others.

An unusual or untoward behavior of a bird may provide indication of something unusual in the offing, but would not indicate one”s future mate.

Such beliefs, though, can be amusing entertainment and add fanciful fun to a day like Valentine”s Day.

Breathing on Feathers: (pt .2)

January 24, 2017, 10:17 AM

By: J Nighteagle

Continuing on from last week.

The significance of breath and air in relation to birds and feathers. Breath is also essential to activating the energy of the feather, weather to help attainment or for healing purposes.

7. Now pick up your feather. ( If you have more than one, do this part one at a time ). Hold it by its stem with both hands several inches in front of your mouth. Keep your eyes closed and imagine its wing moment while in flight. As you focus on this, allow your breathing to follow the same rhythm. As the wings move down, you inhale. As they move up, you exhale. ( this may seem strange at first, but remember that birds breath opposite of humans ).

8. With each breath out, exhale on the feather. Envision this as a means of both honoring the power of flight and also uniting your life breath with the life breath of your bird totem. Continuing this breathing for a minute or two. Visualize this as a breathing of new life into the feather and the archetypal forces behind it.

9. As you do this you should feel a slight vibration in the step of the feather. It may be a tingling, a sense of increased pressure, a warmth or some such feeling. This feeling will encompass both hands, as the energy of the feather comes to life and effects the air around it.

10. As you hold the feather, try to imagine the energy surrounding the feather moving up your arms and into your body. You may feel it, see it, sense it, or simply imagine it. As you focus on it, it will occur. Remember, all energy follows thought. Take a view moments and visualize the energy of the bird awakening in you, with all of its corresponding abilities. Envision yourself using those energies and abilities successfully in the week ahead.

Take a few moments and repeat this exercise as often as you use the feather(s). It awakens and empowers them. The energies around the feathers will increase each time you do this. It has a accumulative effect. It will enable you to fly higher or just go deeper within yourself. It will make manifesting the energies of the bird in your life much easier

Accessories of The Zodiac: Aquarius

It is the dawning of the age of Aquarius! Ha! With 2017 in full swing let’s get started with some brand new styles (and some beloved older ones) from Stella and Dot to continue with our 11th article in the Accessories of The Zodiac series.

Those born in Aquarius tend to go one of two ways when it comes to their fashion choices; they either don’t want to be bothered trying to pick out an outfit or accessories, or they are all about exploring fun new styles and playing around with funky new pieces. Whatever type you may be one thing holds true…Aquarians always are on the look out for pieces that come from companies that donate portions of their profits to benefit important causes.

If you have read any of the previous blogs in this series you know by now I am an Independent Stylist with Stella and Dot. I would like to just say that I love this company for so many reasons. The Stella & Dot Foundation was established by Stella & Dot in 2010 to engage and inspire our community to effect positive change in the lives of women and their families.

In addition to our support of our year-round global charity partner, Every Mother Counts, Stella & Dot also donates to Autism Awareness Month in April, Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, and supports military families through our Buy One, Gift One program in November.

Onto the pieces I’ve chosen for this lively sign.

I’m going to begin with the pieces that I know the Aquarius woman will love because they are fashionable while being not too flashy and the proceeds go to the Every Mother Counts Foundation. To add a bit of flare to the wrist, the Illuminate Cuff (pictured upper right) is super cute. Simple yet meaningful. Malleable gold-plated brass cuff with a beautiful hand woven braid pattern. The interior is embossed with the names of all the important ladies in your life: MERE – SOEUR – FILLE – MOTHER – SISTER – DAUGHTER – MAMA – SCHWESTER – TOCHTER; which translates to Mother, Sister, Daughter in French, English, and German.

Shades of aquamarine and turquoise are real stand out colors for Aquarius accessories. Much like the personality traits of this sign, these colors are happy, open, and cool. I have lot’s of great pieces to balance the Aquarius with some color coordinating bling.

The Artisan Stretch Bracelets (pictured upper left) are wonderful pieces you can wear anytime anywhere. These Hand-beaded semi-precious labradorite & aqua amazonite stones mixed with metal and wood beads create an instant arm party. Inspired by one of a kind artisan crafts.

Another great piece is the Triangle Stone Pendant Necklace (pictured lower left). Semi-precious amazonite pendant hangs from a shiny silver delicate chain. Wear alone as a feminine pendant or together as a set. I love this piece because like most of the Stella collection, it’s versatile and can be worn more than one way. The color will help promote free thinking and confidence for our Aquarius.

Aquarians are the type of people who are quirky trendsetters who like to push boundaries and can pretty much pull off anything. They like experimenting with new looks that tend to be ahead of their time. In staying with the aquamarine theme I have going here for this blog I am going to suggest the amazing Cleopatra Stone Necklace (pictured lower right) for the truly eccentric Aquarius. Hand-strung semi-precious Amazonite beads mix with cool colors to form this striking neutral statement necklace. Embody the Queen of Egypt and wear it long and dramatic or shorten it up.

For these and other looks check out www.stelladot.com/sites/erinbradshaw.

Breathing on Feathers: (pt .1)

The significance of breath and air in relation to birds and feathers. Breath is also essential to activating the energy of the feather, weather to help attainment or for healing purposes. There are, of course, many ways of breathing life into feathers, but we are going to focus on two. In this exercise you will learn to activate the energy of the feather by breathing on it. In the next exercise you will learn to heal with feathers by breathing on it.

The breathing on of feathers should be done through out the time that you are getting acquainted with your feathers as described as  in the first exercise. It should always be preformed  before using the feather in meditation, healing, shape shifting, or in any other endeavor. Your breath becomes the activating principal. It triggers the life and energy of the feather, awakening the archetypal forces reflected by it.

For this to work most effectively, you must have done some background work on the feather and the bird it came from. You should be aware of the kind of energies are most likely connected to it. Those qualities of the bird that you wish to be activated and breathed into new life within you are even more important.

1. Find a time in which you will not be disturbed.

2. Set the atmosphere with incense, sounds of nature music, or anything you find beneficial.

3. Set your feather(s) in front of you or upon your lap.

4. Begin slow, rhythmic breathing. Inhale fore a count of four, hold to a count of fore, and then exhale for a count of fore. Keep your breath slow and steady. Feel yourself relaxing more deeply with each breath.

5. Bring to your mind the image of the bird. Mentally review all of its qualities and characteristics. Remember that air and breath are also associated with mental activity.

6. Now visualize your bird in flight, free and strong within your mind. As you observe its flight in your own mind, see it radiating the qualities you have come to associate with it.

Prayer Sticks and Wands

January 10, 2017, 10:57 AM

To the Hopi and Pueblo Indians there were many ways of making offerings to Spirit. Corn meal could have been cast to the various directions. Turquoise was often offered, and water contained within a shell was also a common offering. By far the most important tool for connecting with and making offering and petitions to the spirit world was the prayer stick.

Prayer sticks can be shorter then your fingers, or as long as your forearm. There are no rules to the length. To the Pueblo of Acoma there were 17 common types of Prayer sticks, and the people would make offerings of 16-80 prayer sticks a year.

The most common type of  stick was that of a peeled willow branch. These were often painted and had carved notches and grooves. Once the painting and carving was competed , then the feather(s) would be attached. The feather(s) are either tied or stuck into one end of the stick. The colors, the notches, the feather, and the kind of stick all had significance were combined into a prayer stick to serve as a petition to a spirit.

The stick is a message, and the feather the call to the spirit bird or totem to carry the message to heavens. One end of the stick is planted in the earth. As the breeze catches the feather, it activates its energies and links the earth request with the heavens.

Ideally, the stick and feather should be compatible. The qualities of the bird should harmonize with the qualities and energies of the stick. One of the easiest ways to determine this is to examine the tree the bird usually builds its nest in. For example, grouse love oak forests and areas where grapes grow. If you had a grouse feather, you could use a oak or the stick from a wild grape bush.

An oriole will build its hanging nest from a forked twig, so using a forked stick, with the oriole feather would add to your ability to link with this totem. You could add to its effectiveness by painting one fork of the stick yellow or orange and the other black–the traditional colors of the oriole. Remember all feathers are associated with, and are relate to spirit and the gods. They are symbols for the breath of life.

We can use animal imagery and other nature totem images as a way to learn about ourselves and the invisible world. We do not have to believe that these images and totems are beings of great intelligence, but there are archetypes powers that reside behind and oversee all manifestation in Nature.

These archetypes have their own qualities and characteristics which are reflected through the behaviors and activities of animals and other expressions of Nature. When we pay attention to and acknowledge a nature totem, we are honoring the essence that lies behind it. We are opening up and attuning to that essence. We can use it to understand our own life circumstance more clearly. We can share in its power or “ medicine”. Nature totems- –especially animals– are symbols of specific kinds of energy we are manifesting and aligning with in our life.

The animal becomes a symbol of a specific force of the inevitable, spiritual realm manifesting in our own life. The characteristics and activities of these totems will revel much about our innate powers and abilities. By studying the totem and then learning to merge with it, we are able to call upon

its archetypal energy when ever we needed. Terrestrial animals have always had a strong symbology associated with them. They have represented the emotional side of life, often reflecting qualities that must be overcome, controlled, and or/ expressed. They are also symbols of power–powers associated with the invisible realm that we can learn to manifest within the visible..

Birds have always been considered symbols of the sole. There ability to fly reflects the abilities within us to rise to a new awareness, bridging the earth and the heavens. As totems, birds have their own peculiar characteristics, but they can all be used to stimulate greater flights of hope, inspiration and ideas.

Aquatic life can also be a totem. Water is an ancient symbol of the astral plane and the creative element of life. Various fish and other forms of aquatic life symbolize guidance to specific expressions of intuition and creative imagination. They can reflect the feminine side of our essence

The Mystery of Predator and Pray

Choose an incident from your present, positive or negative. This can be an event, an outburst, anything that seems to stand out for you in the past three months. As you focus on it, close your eyes, and envision your totem approaching you.

Allow your totem to lead you back to the day of that event. Observe it, replay it in your mind. Then allow your totem to lead you further back, to show you something that helped lead to that event. Do this at least four times.

Some people find that there are large jumps in time in this exercise. They go back five, sometimes even ten, and find themselves replaying a situation from the past that does not seem connected at all. There is always a connection though. The emotion or before in the past event may be part of a pattern that led to what you experienced recently.

Simply observe. When you return you will have time to contemplate and make the connections. Agin let your totem take you back to the present, past those events. You may wish to have it speak to you, but do not have it melt into you to heal and strengthen, to bring clarification, in the days that follow, on the relationship of events.

It is a good idea to write down the events you encounter in this visualization. Writing them down will help you to draw their essence out of that ethereal mental realm and help you to clarify them in your own mind. Do not be discourage if you do not active results at first.. Persist. As you develop your relationship with your totem through such exercises as these., the ability to use them for both past and future exploration will develop.

Eventually you can use the same process to explore the impact present events will have upon the future. This is a little more difficult, because it is difficult to be objective. There can be a tenancy to project what we want to have occur upon your mind, rather then see the effects that are actually set into motion.

Augury and The Meaning of Landscapes

December 6, 2016, 12:02 PM

One of the ways you can come to understand Nature and what she says to you through animals is by examine the symbolism of the habitats.  The landscapes, the habitats, the countryside in which animals are observed and experienced can add much to your understanding of the role they will play in your life as totems. Keep in mind that the inner, spiritual forces often unfold as forms within Nature. This means then a mountain crest has much greater significance then just being on top of a big hill.

Different worlds-different landscapes-reflect different states of beings. We can discover much about our own state of being by orienting ourselves to the landscapes within our live. Many societies recognized the importance of landscapes and spatial shapes and forms. They saw them as dynamic symbols. We can discover much about our own life situation by orienting our selves to our landscapes and life within it. To do this appropriately, we must consider:

1. The predominate elements and character of the whole, natural and artificial, i.e the trees, flowers, the ground, etc.

2. The spatial symbolism.

3. The form or pattern of the terrain ( soft, hard, broken, sloped, etc. )

4. The relationship of a specific area to the whole region.

5. The general cyclic pattern( seasonal, yearly, etc. )

6.  The predominate colors.

7.  The predominate wild life.

Continued next week.
