Beauty, Gratitude and the Open Heart.

“Beauty on your earth is a shadow of the beauty of our heaven, and it’s a bitter thing to have a blindness for beauty on earth, for it makes a longer teaching to see the beauties of heaven.” Spoken by an Irish spirit in the book “The Boy who Saw True” (anonymous author).

I have been counseling individuals, couples, families and business partners for the last 35 years, and am the author of eight published books. Since my work is spiritually based, I have developed many ways of helping people open their hearts to love. Opening to beauty is one of those ways.

I have always appreciated beauty. Since I’ve been a small child, I’ve collected beautiful things – shells, rocks, wood, as well as works of art, and there are always lots of plants around. There is nowhere in my environment where there is not something beautiful to look at, both inside and outside in nature. When I walk through my home and the land around it, my heart fills with awe and love as I appreciate the beauty around me. I’ve done this so automatically throughout my life that it never occurred to me that many people do not open to beauty nor create beauty around them.

In working with some of my clients struggling to keep their heart open, I’ve mentioned focusing on an object of beauty, and have been surprised to find that many of them have no beauty around them – no plants, flowers, works of art or objects of nature. When they look around they see walls, appliances, computers and other buildings. Their left brain functions just fine in this environment, but what about the right – the creative, intuitive, spiritually-connected aspect?

I want to encourage everyone who reads this to consider feeding your soul with beauty. There is nothing like awe and gratitude for something beautiful to open the heart to gratitude in general. If you can love the intricate design in the bark of a tree, or the vibrancy of a flower, or the balance of a beautifully thrown piece of pottery – that might lead you into loving and appreciating the beauty of you and your own soul. It might open you to feeling gratitude for your life and the sacred privilege of experiencing your journey on this planet.

How much of your thinking time is spent being upset or unhappy about something? What if all that time was spent in gratitude for what you have and for the beauty around you? What if you were present enough in this moment to revel in the fact that you can turn on a faucet and have hot water come out? That you have food to eat and a bed to sleep on? If you are reading this, it is likely that you have a computer, which means you have more than most of the people on this planet.

Try this little experiment: find something of beauty – it can be as simple as a leaf, a flower, a photograph, a small work of art or the top of a tree out your window. Now let yourself completely open to the thing of beauty. Let yourself feel the beauty in your body – in your heart, your solar plexus, in your stomach, arms and legs, in your forehead. Let the beauty enliven your body and fill it with vitality. Breathe in the beauty and feel your body’s reaction to it. Open to gratitude, thanking God for this experience of beauty.

Notice the peace and joy it gives you to be in this moment with this simple object of beauty. What would life be like if you spent more moments like this, in the present with beauty and with all you have? How much of your waking time is spent in this way?

Beauty and gratitude are soul foods. When you choose to open to them, you extend an invitation to love, peace and joy. This raises your frequency and opens the door to your spiritual Guidance. Your Guidance is always here for you, helping you on your soul’s journey. Opening to beauty and gratitude, with a deep intent to learn about what is loving to you and others, will open you to your spiritual Guidance.

Einstein and the Afterlife.

I’ve always enjoyed quotations and teachings from Einstein, he was very interested in Thermodynamics, the first aw of which is something to the effect of “Energy in a closed system can neither be created, nor destroyed, only altered.” He is probably most famously known for his theory of Relativity.

Relativity is in action constantly. The theory being that we are all in our own sphere of existence; with innumerable lines to each other’s existence. Since relativity is connected to the First Law of Thermodynamics, it must be that the human energy, the soul, the spiritual energy remains in constant contact with each of these individual spheres it has touched, regardless of time.
Since this energy can not be destroyed, and exists through time and those relativistic connections, it could be possible to speak to loved ones, to impart a final wish to their soul through time and space. This is something my father had told me late one night when I was having myself a good, solid, existential fret.

In the times where I feel like I need something to hold on to, or, if I worry about what lies beyond this world, I consider that fact. Something happens. Be it a soul, or becoming a part of the earth, or taking ones place among the stars. We do go somewhere. Our energy lives on in some form.

When someone calls in to speak with a psychic, it often calls to mind that particular thought on energy, and what we do here at

Several of our psychics here are mediums. A medium can be defined as “someone who serves as an intermediary between the living and the dead.” The concept of a medium is something that has always intrigued me.

It’s fascinating to realize that you may be able to contact a person or persons with whom you’d formerly though all communication was cut off. Is there anyone you would want to talk to again? Let us know in the comments!

Feng Shui Stories

October 17, 2010, 11:18 PM

By Alex

I would like to relate a couple of Feng Shui stories from my own personal experience. One is from a while back, and the other is from today. Although they were different places, there are some similarities between them.

About 12 years ago I decided to move up into the mountains. I found a nice one bedroom apartment. It was in the basement of a house, close to a highway. I could get to work in 13 minutes. I was worried about snow, but my car had good tires and as it turned out later, everything was pretty much ok in that area. Anyway, I signed the lease with my landlord and moved in. The next day he called me up. He was really mad. My deposit check had bounced. I made it good (I was overdrawn only a few dollars), but when I went over there to give him the money, he was drunk. He told me that he wished he had held out for a higher rent. This is not a good thing to hear from your new landlord. There was nothing I could say or do about that, but I did resolve to pay the rent in cash, on time, every single time after that, just so he wouldn’t have anything else to complain about. So you could say I was intimidated by him.

When I moved in, I realized that here was a major authority figure in my life and I’m having a confrontation with him. I’m not the type that likes confrontations. I started wondering about the Feng Shui of my apartment. Up until this point in my understanding of Feng Shui, I had not really been concerned with the directions or elements. I had been pretty much using Black Hat Feng Shui and just the 9 Cures method of balancing things. This situation required more investigation.

It turned out that the kitchen had an unusual shape. There was a triangular corner in the kitchen that pointed North. The triangle is the shape of Fire, and since this pointed North, which was the direction of Water, it indicated that there was a conflict between Fire and Water, which are opposites. I had to look up in a Feng Shui book what to do. In order to balance the conflict between Fire and Water, which are opposites, you need to introduce the Wood element. I put a hanging plant in that corner and after that things got better. I can’t say they were ever great, but I did like that place in many ways. I lived there about a year and a half, and had to move out because the landlord wanted his mother to live there.

My next story is more recent and is about where I live now. Yesterday I started thinking about something that I noticed a while back. My front door opens to a street that runs past my house, parallel to the front door. My house is set pretty close to the road, probably about 10 feet back from it. On the other side of the road is an embankment, about 10 feet high, covered with some kind of bush. This embankment runs the length of the street, parallel to it, probably about a quarter mile in length. Up on top of this embankment is another street. There is a white picket fence that runs along the top of this embankment, which abuts the sidewalk on the side of this upper street.

Almost directly across from my front door is a narrow set of steps set into the dirt of the embankment, leading down from this upper street to the one running past my house. So when I look out the door I see (from bottom to top): porch, sidewalk, street, embankment, narrow steps, white picket fence, then some apartment buildings. I was looking out my front door at this situation a couple of months ago and wondered if it was affecting the feng shui of my house somehow. I figured it out today. I had read some more of my Feng Shui books last night and found a situation just like this.

It turns out that if your front door faces North and there is a hill in front of it, this will block the energy in the career area of your home. (North is the direction associated with Career.) Hmm. Sounds familiar. I started looking for a job earlier this year and after a few months I noticed something. Of all the applications I put in, nobody called me back. I found that very strange. When I did find a job, the people seemed very controlling and I felt quite stifled. Now I know why.

It’s because of that hill and fence in front of my front door, and the narrow little opening with the steps coming down. This indicates blockage in the career area and a very narrow, difficult path to go upwards. Sounds like my job and the people I work for…. Now you will probably say “But the economy is bad….” and you would have a point. However, I did check my theory out with Cat (one of Foretell’s psychics) and she said I was correct.

The next question was what to do about it. In Feng Shui, it is commonly suggested to put an aquarium in the wealth area to increase wealth, so I thought perhaps an aquarium (the career area is in the North, and the element of the North is water) would increase the energy of that area, since it apparently was being blocked from outside my house. Again I checked this with Cat and she seemed to think it would work. It will probably cost at least $100 to try this out. There are other ways to activate the energy in the North area of my house. One other option might be to put a lamp, or a mirror in the North, but I think the aquarium would be the more appropriate choice.

There are a few other strange incidents that happened in the last year that I think might be related to Feng Shui. About 6 months ago I heard a loud “thump” on the side of the house while I was asleep on the couch. I got up and opened the front door to look outside and see what was going on. There was a guy up on the steps across the street. I knew he had thrown something at my house, I just didn’t know what it was. (It was a beer bottle.) I yelled at him to stop. He started yelling and swearing at me but he didn’t make any sense so I figured he was on drugs. He said “this is America. You can’t just live anywhere you want.” I closed the door and waited because I didn’t really want to get into a fight with him. Eventually he went away. I called the police and they sent a patrol car down the street. I saw him one more time about 2 days later, and never saw him again. Kat said that he mistook me for someone else that he was mad at.

Another time, a couple of months ago, I came home and there were about 10 kids sitting on those steps across the street. I left the door open and watched them. I felt that not all of them were bad, but there were a few that were up to no good. I wasn’t sure what they were going to do, but I just wanted to make sure nothing happened to my house. I got on the phone. I wanted them to think I was calling the police. I pointed to them, to make them think that I was talking about them. I went back into my office to look up the phone number for the police, and sure enough there was a knock on the door.

A young girl who was part of the group was on my porch and wanted to know what I was doing. She was concerned that I was calling the police when the kids had done nothing wrong. I told her basically that I hadn’t seen them do anything wrong, that they were free to do whatever they wanted, but that I just wanted to make sure nothing bad happened to my house. I figured that was fair, logical and reasonable. She went back to them and told them what I said. After a few minutes they went away and I never saw them together again.

For the most part, ever since I moved in here I have been afraid that someone would burn my house down or break into it. It was to the point where I was sleeping on the sofa so if someone came in I would hear it right away, and there were times I was afraid to leave because I thought someone might be watching me and waiting for an opportunity to break in. Now I am pretty sure these incidents and feelings are related to the Feng Shui here.

My house has a big open doorway from the living room into the kitchen, so that the front door, this doorway and the large window in my kitchen are all in a line. What that means is that a lot of energy from the North can go very quickly into the South. It’s similar to the basement apartment – a conflict between Water and Fire.

It is possible that I should have a curtain across this large doorway into the kitchen, but I am reluctant to do that because so much light comes in to the kitchen from the south facing bay window. It would make the rest of the place pretty dark, unless it is a translucent beaded curtain. In the last week or two I put two large plants (Wood) in this doorway, to slow down the energy coming from the front door (North) into the kitchen (South.), and I feel like I can relax more now. It’s kind of interesting because it’s basically the same conflict (Water and Fire) that I had going in the basement apartment 10 years ago, just with a little different twist to it.
