Presence and Our Range of Emotions

This is a lesson about accessing joy.

 

During a recent Yin yoga class, the teacher talked about avoiding pain. She spoke of a study, which revealed women giving birth most often ask for pain medication because women fear that the pain will soon become too great, and not because it is too painful in the moment. Moment-to-moment the women in labor in the study reported their pain was bearable, but that if it got any worse they wouldn’t be able to bear it. This can mirror how one often pulls away from living on their growth-edge because people tend to imagine the worsening of pain, rather than staying in the moment. When present to difficult feelings in any given moment, most often the discovery is that it is fine.

 

In a Yin yoga class, the poses are held for up to 10 minutes (which may feel like forever particularly when the stretch is intense). Students should pay close attention to the panicked instinct to pull back and get out of the pose for relief. When this occurs, rather than getting out of the pose, instead ask to yourself if the instinct is really about too much discomfort in that moment, or if the urge is in response to anticipated pain. Something curious maybe discovered. If attention is brought towards breathing and staying in the moment, there may be a greater level of relaxation, which allows connective fascia to open and stretch. Staying with the present sensation, rather than the worry of what might be felt next is a key.

 

This type of mindfulness exercise can be applied to emotional stress in life as well. And on a greater level, this discovery may also bring about presence and joy.

 

How does this relate? Most people have come to bittersweet places of cherishing final moments with people or circumstances of great love and appreciation. When the time arises, ask yourself how you feel right now in the moment rather than the future attachment of not seeing them again. Rather than fear and sadness, a curious thing may happen…frequently this allows for feelings of love and happiness. When focusing on the future, there is a tendency for the anticipation of loss to siphon off the contentment available in the present. Joy is only experienced in the moment and therefore can become greater when we’re present.

 

So challenges like that brought forth in a Yin yoga class can be great practice for exercising the mind’s awareness on both ends of the spectrum– the ability to stick to the present with the challenging moments, can also allow access for the presence of joy. Being present in the moment allows for a much broader range of emotions and access to more authentic living – to being more radiantly alive. And yoga is a great conduit to allow the practice for this discovery.

People who are experiencing emotional suffering can choose to free themselves from the bondage of negative thought. It’s as easy as changing the mind.

 

A common misconception among people who experience a great deal of emotional turmoil is that they are powerless to change their state of mind. When people believe that they are a slave to their emotions then they behave as though they are. They will find themselves caught up in a cycle of negative experiences that manifest as a result of their thoughts and emotions. So how do we know it’s possible to change the mind? We know it is possible based on two very sound principles.

 

Impermanence

 

People can be uncomfortable with change at times. Depending on what aspect of our lives is changing, emotions can be very powerful regarding the change we’re experiencing. Take death for example. We as people are born into this world, we live for a certain period of time, and then we pass away. It’s a truth that is self-evident, yet this aspect of our lives creates one of the most difficult changes we face. Change takes place within us and around us constantly. Just as the world changes, our thoughts change as well. If we know it is possible to change the chemical makeup of the air we breathe just by breathing it than we know we can effect change on any aspect of our lives because it is impermanent.

 

Deciding the type of change you desire is based mostly off of what you truly want to create for yourself. This can be tricky you look at the reality of how we arrived in that particular situation, we can see it came about as a result of our thoughts and the choices we made based on those thoughts. We may think that all we want is happiness, but the thoughts of how to achieve that can sometimes include poor choices, immediate gratification that is also impermanent, or clinging to something without being mindful of its transitory nature. Having a grasp of the impermanence of our destructive thinking empowers us to then create the motivation that will compel us to generate constructive thought. The effect that generating constructive thought has on destructive thought is that it diminishes from the frequency and effect of the destructive thought.

 

 

Opposing Forces

 

The second principle contributing to the possibility that our minds can be changed are the physical laws of how the Universe functions. The physical world is full of opposing forces. Just like good is in conflict with bad, positive is in conflict with negative. The forces are in direct opposition to one another and the more one is enhanced, the other is diminished. Imagine lighting a fire in a dark forest. Before the fire was lit, nothing was visible and dark prevailed, but with the fire the light penetrated the darkness and illuminates the forest. The brighter and more powerful the light is, the less the dark can exist. Thoughts are effected in the same way. The more a person is inclined towards positive and constructive thought, the more it diminishes from the destructive thought’s influence on the mind. Getting in the habit of generating constructive thought helps the mind to focus less on destructive thought. The result is that experience.

• Compassion

• Equanimity

• Impermanence

• Patience

• Tolerance

 

In order for a person to change the way they think, they need to know it’s possible. There are two principles that validate this belief. The first is the fact that everything changes. The transient nature of our thoughts gives us the opportunity to generate enough constructive and positive motivation in our minds to actively suppress the negative thoughts that cause us suffering. Finding the proper motivation means relying on constructive ideas and the willingness to put them into practice.

Tuning Your Senses

Go out and find yourself a peaceful place among trees, on a hillside, or near a river or stream. If that s difficult because you live in a big city, there must be a park near by where you can get away from the hurly-burly and pace of modern civilization and where you can be surrounded by  some natural beauty. Look for a tree that has a fair amount of space around it, and one with a good, thick trunk. Sit with your back against it, so that the trunk supports your back and you can sit upright in comfort. Sit facing the direction of the Sun.

 

The idea is to spend a few minutes concentrating on each of your senses in turn: Watch the sunlight dance on the leaves of the trees. Or notice the rich range of green and brown. Explore the colors of flowers or shrubs, and the crinkly pattern of leaves. If it is winter examine the texture of the tree trunks and the arms and fingers of the branches. Watch the clouds scamper across the sky. Consider the weave of the grass near your feet. Just put all your attention into looking. Then switch your attention to listening. Hear the whisper of the wind in the trees, the song of the birds, the melody of the flowing water, the hum of the insects. Just listen for the sounds of nature.

 

Next, concentrate your attention on your sense of touch. Feel the warmth of the sun on your cheek, the caress of the wind in your hair, or the kiss of rain on your lips. Take off your shoes and let your feet sink into the soft, springy soil beneath you. Feel your oneness with Nature. Smell the sent of the grass, the sweet fragrance of flowers, the solid earthiness of the soil beneath your feet. Put all your attention into your sense of smell so that you breath in the flagrance of Nature.

 

Then taste. Television commercials invite us to taste the freshness of certain foods, and that may be an exaggeration. But your taste buds will respond to the true freshness of Nature. Discover the taste in fresh air that starts the saliva flowing – and that’s no exaggeration.

 

Spend at least five minutes or so in putting each of your senses to work in this way, and you will experience a contact with Nature that you have, perhaps, not known before. Indeed, if you will spend a little time in this tranquillity, if only for a half hour or so once a week, within a few weeks you will recognize for yourself an opening up of your senses, a sharpening of your intuitiveness and creativity, and an awareness of the spirit of things. And one day when you preform this exercise you will become aware of the sounds behind those of the Earth, the hidden sounds of Nature as the Indian was so readily able to do. When that day comes, as it will, you will understand the heart of the Redman.

As I’ve mentioned in a previous blog, everyday I like to pull a single card from my new tarot deck and give myself a “Daily Focus” reading. This type of reading is good for a few reasons; one it doesn’t take a lot of time so if you have a busy schedule you can do it in the amount of time it takes to brush your teeth, and two it really does help me find what I need to focus on and pay close attention to that day.

 

This morning I shuffled my deck and asked what my focus should be on, cut the cards and chose The Five of Wands.

 

As I read what the card represented I chuckled a bit knowing that Monday’s are very busy for me, especially today. I have a to-do list a mile long and as I clocked in this morning I panicked a bit wondering how I was going to get all of the tasks completed but then I thought of my daily focus card.

 

The Meaning of The Five of Wands:

 

What it represents- Feeling scattered, lack of focus, feeling lost.

 

The five of wands is a card of conflict. I may find myself scattered and distracted, tending to everything and nothing. Wands usually deal with goals so the conflict resides within. Take this card as a warning: find ways to bring calm to my mind or these problems will increase.

 

What I got from this was that I needed to take a few minutes to myself and get my mind right before starting some of my tasks. I made myself some tea, did a few jumping jacks to get my blood pumping and relieve some stress, then started with easy tasks like replying to emails etc. I know I tend to get overwhelmed easily and pulling this card today helped me see that I need to take time to myself so that I don’t…basically have a nervous breakdown. Haha.
