Breathing on Feathers: (pt .2)

Continuing on from last week.

 

The significance of breath and air in relation to birds and feathers. Breath is also essential to activating the energy of the feather, weather to help attainment or for healing purposes.

 

7. Now pick up your feather. ( If you have more than one, do this part one at a time ). Hold it by its stem with both hands several inches in front of your mouth. Keep your eyes closed and imagine its wing moment while in flight. As you focus on this, allow your breathing to follow the same rhythm. As the wings move down, you inhale. As they move up, you exhale. ( this may seem strange at first, but remember that birds breath opposite of humans ).

 

8. With each breath out, exhale on the feather. Envision this as a means of both honoring the power of flight and also uniting your life breath with the life breath of your bird totem. Continuing this breathing for a minute or two. Visualize this as a breathing of new life into the feather and the archetypal forces behind it.

 

9. As you do this you should feel a slight vibration in the step of the feather. It may be a tingling, a sense of increased pressure, a warmth or some such feeling. This feeling will encompass both hands, as the energy of the feather comes to life and effects the air around it.

 

10. As you hold the feather, try to imagine the energy surrounding the feather moving up your arms and into your body. You may feel it, see it, sense it, or simply imagine it. As you focus on it, it will occur. Remember, all energy follows thought. Take a view moments and visualize the energy of the bird awakening in you, with all of its corresponding abilities. Envision yourself using those energies and abilities successfully in the week ahead.

 

Take a few moments and repeat this exercise as often as you use the feather(s). It awakens and empowers them. The energies around the feathers will increase each time you do this. It has a accumulative effect. It will enable you to fly higher or just go deeper within yourself. It will make manifesting the energies of the bird in your life much easier

Breathing on Feathers: (pt .1)

The significance of breath and air in relation to birds and feathers. Breath is also essential to activating the energy of the feather, weather to help attainment or for healing purposes. There are, of course, many ways of breathing life into feathers, but we are going to focus on two. In this exercise you will learn to activate the energy of the feather by breathing on it. In the next exercise you will learn to heal with feathers by breathing on it.

 

The breathing on of feathers should be done through out the time that you are getting acquainted with your feathers as described as  in the first exercise. It should always be preformed  before using the feather in meditation, healing, shape shifting, or in any other endeavor. Your breath becomes the activating principal. It triggers the life and energy of the feather, awakening the archetypal forces reflected by it.

 

For this to work most effectively, you must have done some background work on the feather and the bird it came from. You should be aware of the kind of energies are most likely connected to it. Those qualities of the bird that you wish to be activated and breathed into new life within you are even more important.

 

1. Find a time in which you will not be disturbed.

 

2. Set the atmosphere with incense, sounds of nature music, or anything you find beneficial.

 

 

3. Set your feather(s) in front of you or upon your lap.

 

4. Begin slow, rhythmic breathing. Inhale fore a count of four, hold to a count of fore, and then exhale for a count of fore. Keep your breath slow and steady. Feel yourself relaxing more deeply with each breath.

 

5. Bring to your mind the image of the bird. Mentally review all of its qualities and characteristics. Remember that air and breath are also associated with mental activity.

 

6. Now visualize your bird in flight, free and strong within your mind. As you observe its flight in your own mind, see it radiating the qualities you have come to associate with it.

The Mystery of Predator and Pray

Choose an incident from your present, positive or negative. This can be an event, an outburst, anything that seems to stand out for you in the past three months. As you focus on it, close your eyes, and envision your totem approaching you.

 

Allow your totem to lead you back to the day of that event. Observe it, replay it in your mind. Then allow your totem to lead you further back, to show you something that helped lead to that event. Do this at least four times.

 

Some people find that there are large jumps in time in this exercise. They go back five, sometimes even ten, and find themselves replaying a situation from the past that does not seem connected at all. There is always a connection though. The emotion or before in the past event may be part of a pattern that led to what you experienced recently.

 

Simply observe. When you return you will have time to contemplate and make the connections. Agin let your totem take you back to the present, past those events. You may wish to have it speak to you, but do not have it melt into you to heal and strengthen, to bring clarification, in the days that follow, on the relationship of events.

 

It is a good idea to write down the events you encounter in this visualization. Writing them down will help you to draw their essence out of that ethereal mental realm and help you to clarify them in your own mind. Do not be discourage if you do not active results at first.. Persist. As you develop your relationship with your totem through such exercises as these., the ability to use them for both past and future exploration will develop.

 

Eventually you can use the same process to explore the impact present events will have upon the future. This is a little more difficult, because it is difficult to be objective. There can be a tenancy to project what we want to have occur upon your mind, rather then see the effects that are actually set into motion.

Augury and The Meaning of Landscapes

One of the ways you can come to understand Nature and what she says to you through animals is by examine the symbolism of the habitats.  The landscapes, the habitats, the countryside in which animals are observed and experienced can add much to your understanding of the role they will play in your life as totems. Keep in mind that the inner, spiritual forces often unfold as forms within Nature. This means then a mountain crest has much greater significance then just being on top of a big hill.

 

Different worlds-different landscapes-reflect different states of beings. We can discover much about our own state of being by orienting ourselves to the landscapes within our live. Many societies recognized the importance of landscapes and spatial shapes and forms. They saw them as dynamic symbols. We can discover much about our own life situation by orienting our selves to our landscapes and life within it. To do this appropriately, we must consider:

 

1. The predominate elements and character of the whole, natural and artificial, i.e the trees, flowers, the ground, etc.

2. The spatial symbolism.

3. The form or pattern of the terrain ( soft, hard, broken, sloped, etc. )

4. The relationship of a specific area to the whole region.

5. The general cyclic pattern( seasonal, yearly, etc. )

6.  The predominate colors.

7.  The predominate wild life.

Exercise Pt. 1

As you relax, you find yourself growing lighter and lighter. The surroundings seem to fade, and you are in a warm dark cloak of your own energy and mind. It is safe, warm and comfortable.

 

In your minds eye you begin to see soft light, and slowly the view opens. You find yourself at the edge of a crystalline pool of water. The sky above is blue, and there is a soft haze on the distant horizon.

 

Above you, the sun and moon can be seen together in the sky. You are not sure if it is dusk or dawn, but you know it is one of those powerful “ Between Times,” a time in witch there is a thinning of the veils between the physical and the spiritual. At your right, at the end of the pool, is a waterfall. The spray from it is cool and misty, and where it touches the pool, water ripples outward, distorting all reflections. It gives the area a surreal appearance.

 

You look about you at the green grasses and the distant trees, and all is silent. It is as if nature is in a state of quite anticipation. You look back to the waterfall and you notice a dark area behind it. You move toward it, and as you stand close to the waterfall, you see a cave half-canceled behind it. You step carefully behind the waters and into the muted darkness of the inner cave. You are surprised, for it is illuminated with soft torches. The light given off from them give the open chamber a warmth. Somehow it looks familiar, and it makes you feel as if you were expected..

 

To the back of that chamber is a tunnel that is also lit with torches. You glance over your shoulder to the area beyond the waterfall, and then walk further into the cave. It is warm and comfortable as it first appeared, and as you step further in toward the back of the tunnel, you feel a slight giddiness , and a soft childlike laugh slips out. For the first in a long time, you feel like a child, about to open and explore wondrous treasures of the world.

Discovering Ones Totem Pt. 2

(Continued from last week.)

 

Last Wednesday we started going through the steps one must take to discover their totems. This blog will continue on from last week explaining the last steps.

 

8. Move back to the cave or tree and step back through it through its other entrance point. Then step back through it

9. Take four or five slow, deep breaths and allow yourself to feel grounded and connected .

10. Begin your verification process. Research and study the totem and its qualities.. Meditate and concentrate plate on its qualities as they apply to you and your life circumstances.

 

Preparation:

Drums and rattles are ,effective instruments to use although they are not crucial. If drums and rattles are used, the rhythm should be slow and steady. You should let the drum beat lead you. I recommend you do not do any imaging, just sit and feel the drum beat for at least five minutes. This relaxes you and brings your body rhythms into synchronization with the drum. If you do not have drums or a rattle, you may use some soft music that is repetitive and nonintrusive.

 

Make sure you wont be disturbed. Take the phone off the hook, lock the door, and / or do what ever is necessary so that you will not be interrupted.. Make yourself comfortable. Sit or lie down, whatever is easiest for you, but make sure your back is strait so the  blood can flow freely up the spine. Close your eyes and breath deeply. Then begin to preform a progressive relaxation. Focus on each part of the body, sending warm, soothing sensations through it. Start at the feet and work your way to the top of the head. Take your time with this. The more you are relaxed you are, the more effective the exercise will be. Don’t worry if your mind wanders. Just bring it back to where you left off and continue. Then simply imagine the scenes that follow.

Discovering Ones Totem Pt. 1

Keep in mind that frightening images are more often then not projections of your own fears. They may also be expressions of resistance. Its amazing sometimes how programed we are not to accept that cant be rationally explained at the moment. Most people have some degree of programming of the idea–“Better the devil you know than the one you don’t.”

 

When you start exploring the inner realms and their play upon the outer world through nature it can be a little disturbing. There is often a sense of being vulnerable and unprotected, of having no control. If you find yourself encountering fear and resistance, think about your favorite pet, and imagine yourself taking it along with you in the exercise. This will calm you, and its energy is always loving and protective to you in the inner realms

 

With exercises such as those that follow, individuals often wonder if they are experiencing a true shamanic journey. The difference is simply the depth of the experience. In a true shamanic journey, you are actually in it, felling it and experiencing it first hand. It will not always follow a prescribed pattern. In meditational exercises such as the following, you often observe yourself experiencing the situation or imaging how it would be experience. With time and practice the meditation can become a doorway to a true journey.

 

Most exercises to discover one”s totem follow a basic pattern:

 

1. Relaxation.

2. Entering a cave or a tree.

3. Leaving the cave or tree to enter a meadow or natural area.

4. Experiencing peacefulness of nature.

5. Allowing the totem to enter the seen.

6. Allowing the animal to speak to you–its movements, sound, form, color, etc…will give you a message about its power. You may even hear its thoughts in your own. Allow it to tell you or show you how it has helped you in the past and how it will do so in the future.

7. Give thanks to it for making it self known, and ask it for some tangible confirmation in the next week or so it is truly your animal totem.

 

Such confirmation can come in many ways. You may see its face in the markings of a stone. It may come to you in a dream. You may encounter figurines, pictures or television. Programs on it, but if it is truly your totem, there will come some confirmation of its presence it tangible form, in a quantity that is more than coincidence.

 

The Power of Imitation:

Everything in nature resonates with the force of the Divine Spirit. Each animal, plant, bird, and stone reflect this spirit in its own way. The more you are able to aline with it and create your own resonance, the easier it will be to understand what nature is saying.

 

Throughout time, one of the most common and effective means of attuning to nature was imitation of it. Individuals would assume postures and movements of animals and incorporate them into sacred dances. Throughout the dance and a costume depicting the animal, the individual could take on the identity of the totem.

 

Every animal has its own movements and postures. Costumes and movements can be employed to awaken to the arc typical force behind various animals. An individual could crouch like a Lion, creep like a turtle, hop like a bird. A bran owl will often rock side to side to assist itself in pin pointing a location of prey through sight and sound. Great horned owls will clack their beaks together as a warning. Vultures will, upon rising, will face the Sun and spread their wings outward.                       :

 

Adopting the movements and guise of your animal is a way of reawakening yourself to the essence of it and spirit manifesting through it. This helps you to shape shift your normal consciousness to a stronger perception and consciousness of that particular expression of Nature. Examine some of the Eastern sciences such as yoga, Taoism, and kung fu. They are filled with movements reflecting animals. They will stimulate ideas which you can imitate and use effectively to aline with your animal totem. Find books and videos on the behavior of birds and animals and study their basic postures and movements. Go to the zoo or nature center and observe how they move and stand. How do they hold their heads? How do they place their feet when they walk? Then when you are at home, imitate them. See it as a form of dance that honors your totem and invokes its energy more dynamically into your life.

Directional Technology

Air is similar in nature to mental energy  - ideas and things of the mind that come quickly and suddenly and then vanish with out being seen. Indeed, we talk of ideas coming into our minds “out of thin air “. Thought like air is elusive. So Air in the North can be linked to the mind, to the intellect , to logic, to thinking, and everything concerned with mental effort.

 

Fire – light energy that comes from the Sun – can be linked to the Spirit because elemental Fire has qualities which are similar to the light of the Spirit. Fire in the East can be linked to spiritual illumination and enlightenment, to principals and spiritual things.

 

Water in the South has the characteristics of fluidity and motion. Elemental Water can be likened to the emotions which are our energies in a fluid state. So emotions and feelings and intuitive senses can be related to the South direction.

 

Earth is inertia, stability and solidarity. So elemental Earth in the West has qualities similar to material, physical objects and the physical body.

 

Our energy system was designed to be expressed . This composite arrangement might be called the Wheel of Life Energies: So the most balanced way to use our energies is to:

 

Determine with the Spirit. Receive with the Mind. Give with the Emotions. Hold with the Body.

Birds are often seen as omens, objects of worship, and even forecasters of the weather. They communicate with anyone who will learn to listen appropriately. Each person though, based upon solid knowledge, must learn to sense how the truth of the birds communication translates into his or her life.

 

Information comes to us through Nature and all of it’s creatures. The body and mind knows and senses that what we see is significant. The flight of the bird and it’s direction is not accidental or without meaning. The time of flight, the place that the bird appeared, and how other birds and animals responded are messages rich in meaning for us.

 

Nature reflects the Divine within the physical world. The animals in Nature are the shadows of those mirrored reflections.

 

Develop a mind set for how you want Nature to respond to you. Take the time in your meditation before going outdoors to out line how you want the message to come to you. If the bird appears on your right, what do you wish to indicate? On the left? The North? The South, the East? The West? Flying up? Flying down? Know ahead of time what you want these things to mean.

 

You don’t have to stay with them; as your relationship with the birds grows, so will the communication process.
